Default power steering noise (maybe)

Hi to all

I say ''maybe'' because lm having to try and work this out from 2000 miles away from my car.....son sent me a vid of the prob (which isnt uploading.....grrrrrr)

my 92 seems to sound ''rat at tat tat tat'' when steering is slightly turned either way so my immediate guess was steering pump (part number or is is generic c4?)

it happens at tickover while stationary (lm not driving this anywhere )

has fluids in reservoir so not leaking

then again lm not discounting some other pulley or the water pump but l just cant tell yet and my son hasnt got an experienced ear

opinions would be appreciated......

I just ran a p/n check at RockAuto.com comparing a Z to a regular vette. The p/n's are different.

He did check the fluid level when "HOT" right? Assuming that the noise only occurs at idle speed, standing still, with light pressure applied to the steering I would have to say a closer look at the pump would be in order. Mine used to groan w/motor at idle speed if I turned the wheel, it was air in the system. I had a BG power flush done and it is now cured.

Sorry this is not much help. I can look up the p/n's for the pump on our Z's if you like. Also, I will look in my 90's FSM to see what I may learn in the steering system section & report back.

cheers Tom

appreciate the help on part numbers....lve checked previous threads on this but answers not to clear....guess l could always just go straight to Kurt white for the right part regardless of price

as for the sound....not sure if son checked when hot....prob not

l couldnt upload the video but it sounded like dull metal to metal clacking with slight turn to right or left while stationary...but l guess lm clutching ast straws until l get back and work it out for myself

prob is my son is 18 and not got an experienced ear with motors yet (tho l recall doing my first V8 engine rebuild when l was his age.....but we didnt have X box then did we....oh well)

thanks for your time Tom

Dave,

No, we didn't have X- box....unless I missed it, which is entirely possible. The part, so far in my search, is a core exchange at RockAuto.com. It does not appear to be special except that it is ZR-1 specific.

There is a fluid level indicator on the dip stick for checking the level "cold".....sorry!

Parts: It seems that from GM a new pump is NLA according to my fav chevy parts vendor partszoneonline.com.

RockAuto.com p/n 36516365 = $115.00 w/core chg of $28.00 ( ACDelco reman'ed part ) These guys have other brand pumps too.

AutoZone.com p/n 6365 atsco = $142.00 w/core chg of $60.00 only one here.

Back to diagnostics. I'll bet that there is junk floating in the system's fluid. I would do a flush first. I did see kits to rebuild the pump at A/Zone. There is a rotary control valve at the rack to do direction, and the pump has a flow control valve integral to it. I guess junk in either of those locations could make noise? It can't be the actual pump parts because it is pressurized as long as the motor is running, right?

Let me know if I can be of further assistance Dave.
