My 90 has delam around the edges but not terrible. One of my 91s is near perfect with zero delam. My other 91 was so bad I couldn't see out, replaced it with a standard glass with zero regrets.

Plus those (like myself) who'd put one on the shelf as spare.

I know from other collector car projects that individual glass solutions are being produced from from 7-10 sets, depending on the manufacturer. So, why wait for GM?

Though I need to say that I have no personal experience in ordering bespoke windshields...

Matt,

I am halfway talking through my a*s, but I will say it anyway. From a guy who I heard did this once before it is a very costly venture and investment with the logistics involved, as well as all the other red tape and bureaucracy to import from overseas. I do not think that one could find a US manufacturer to make these. The ones that zr-1windshield.com once sold were from Saint-Gobain who made the GM replacements. I like them better than the LOF I have seen despite those are the originals. I heard that someone it doing another run so hopefully you will hear something soon.

At $2000+ each, not a lot of members are willing to fork it up to replace their delaminated windshields. To be honest, I do not know it I would have if my insurance company did not cover the replacement. I guess I was really lucky as many seem to say not possible with their insurance company.

Matt and Craig,
I was able to get State Farm to fork over $2000+ for a replacement windshield from ZR-1windshield.com but it took many emails, photos, etc to get it approved. First they said they would not pay for OEM and if that is what I wanted I had to pay the difference betweem OEM and replacement costs. Told them it is not OEM but it is the only one that meets OEM spec and in the end they paid. We are having a Wazoo holiday lunch this Sunday and we will get the latest update on the new venture that I understand is in the works. At least that was the word during Carlisle this past August. The hope is to have a replacement windshield with both large and small cutouts for less than $1000. Will keep all posted.

That is great news Charlie about your insurance and the future of replacement windshields for the community. I was also fortunate to find the OEM weatherstrip ($650 from a shop in Maryland) and trim so in total $3800 and I can understand why insurance companies do not want to cover it. That is awesome if they can get it down to a $1000 or less.

Please keep us posted, Sir! That would be awesome - I would definitely go for a $1,000 OEM-ish replacement versus my other idea - regular windshield with tint to recreate the OEM look. Still on the fence with that one, but if the reproduction windshields don't pan out in the next six months to a year, I'll just do the regular route with tint. Mine's too bad to drive in bright sun, and not worth the risk. I love the originality but mine is a hazard in the wrong situation.

That sounds good! I didn't consider that the windshields are European made. Good for me, though... But I know pretty well the magnitude of how much shipping, customs and tax add to a list price.
1000 or even less is fair - for my Audi A6' solar ray windshield (OEM part) I paid 750 Euro ($850 US) over here just for the piece of glass.

But the idea of mimicking the solar ray windshield by adding a layer of tinting is very smart, too.

A few responses up, it was mentioned that the WAZOO group in the Northeast may have some more info after last weekend's get together about the potential for some reproduction windshields in the not-too-distant future? Any news about that?

I had also heard that Safelite may be offering some, but doesn't look like it yet. However, when you select a windshield for a '95 Corvette, it does ask if it is a ZR-1... but unfortunately the cost is the same as a regular windshield, so no way that's a reproduction windshield.

Just wondering!

Thanks,
Mike

Unfortunately no new news on the windshield availability as those involved were not able to make our gatherings. Will keep after this and let all know once we have an update. Keep the faith and Merry Christmas!
