Default Tony D's Project corner (Oil catch cans) Part 2

Below is both catch cans mocked up but not fully connected.


Finished oil catch can assembly.



From my testing which is not visible in the photos. I hooked up an evac system on the exhaust to pull vacuum to the canisters. I used a vacuum/boost gauge to test my work. What I found is that the exhaust system pulled about 3# of vacuum at idle and part throttle and at WOT created +1 psi of pressure. The mufflers created enough back pressure to render the exhaust as a viable source of vacuum at WOT. I was looking for a vacuum source at WOT because when at WOT the intake is no longer pulling vacuum and crank case pressure will build.

Test 2 - I decided to just use intake vacuum as my source and found that it was sufficient enough for the entire power range. I had created extra crank case breathing room when I installed the two oil separator canisters. I found out that this trip to BG only used 1/2 quart of oil to and from. Last year I had used 1 quart up there and 1 quart back. That is a 864 mi trip for me. The results are positive for me being that the crank case cannot any longer get pressurized under any condition. I believe everyone would benefit from such a device.

Excellent write up, Tony. Thank you for this. And great pics as well. Tell me, were your headers already wrapped or did you do that to help protect the OCC?

David, my headers are the Watson and were already ceramic coated and then I previously wrapped them before I reinstalled them. My engine bay heat is much reduced with them wrapped it was worth it.

I was just being extra careful with the canisters.

So how are the 2 ports connected on the canister? Meaning where are they exactly plumbed to?

The clear tube with the John Guest fittings.. What is that for?

Where/how is the exhaust connected to the cans

Upper port goes to vacuum source, i.e. intake manifold. Second upper port is my test port for vacuum/boost gauge.
The bottom port goes to the injector housing vent port. This is where the excess crank case ventilation comes from and aerated oil mist.
The clear tube with the John Guest fittings.. What is that for?
It is so you can tell when it is time to dump excess oil out of the canister.

The canisters are not connected to the exhaust now, that was just an experiment. I wanted to know if the exhaust system could create a vacuum source when at WOT, the answer is no...

I assume you are still using the PCV Valves?

If I recall, OEM the tube come out of the IH and then through 2 PCV in parallel, then to the Plenum for vacuum.. so which side of the PCVs are the cans on?

PVC valves are still used in between the intake vacuum port and the upper portion of the canisters.
They are installed in this manner - Intake vacuum line - hose- PVC- hose- canister.
Vacuum from the intake pulls from the top of the canisters which then pulls from the inside of the canister then from the bottom port which is attached to the injector housing. I don't really think I need them anymore but I must research more on that subject.
