I bought one of these types of engine stands off of ebay...it looks very similiar to the bottom one you have pictured. I tried and tried and couldn't get the holes to line up in any configuration I tried. Also the vertical support posts...front to back...were two far apart for my LT5.

For long term storage, I think this type of engine stand would create less mechanical stress at the rear of the block than the traditional engine stand. The dead weight would be more evenly distributed. There are two down sides to using this type of engine stand for anything other than storage:

1 - you can't rotate the engine to work on it
2 - the engine sits very low to the ground

I'm just speaking from the experience I had...your's may work out.
