Default Jerky Ride

Mine is a 1991 with 16,000 miles and manual trans. I am experiencing a jerky back and forth motion when I accelerate or deaccelerate primarily in upper gears (3rd, 4th, 5th). No other noticeable noises except the clanky noise associated with the jerking. I suspect problem with U-joint(s). Any other thoughts before I take it in for a diagnosis? Thanks.

is the motor and gearing stock?

if you suspect u-joints, you can easily inspect for play in the driveshaft and the prop shafts.

if the motor is not stock and has a "lumpy" cam, with stock 3.45 rear diff gear, then that can cause "bucking" also. resolve with 4.10 gear.

separately, any number of loose suspsension components or bolts could contribute to the symptoms you describe. does it behave the same way under light or heavy throttle?

Check for weak spark on each cylinder. No cost, simple to do.

Stock motor and gearing. Occurs under light throttle in higher gears when applying acceleration or backing off. Feels like "play" in drive train.
