I'm a bit of a neat freak when it comes to the engine bay.
Has anyone found a method/chemical/spray etc that works well on the engine itself? I have small "stains" that are here and there from what appears to be oil. I've tried Simple Green, Purple power and a few other bio degradable products. The only thing that seems to work is Acetone. I'll be happy to use it, but when I rub it on the covers or manifold "silver" comes off on the rag, so I worry about damage. Anyone had success with something else?

The paint on the LT5 is sensitive to chemicals, so I would be careful about their use. What I had some luck with was 0000 Steel Wool with a cleaner wax at the sametime. Go slow with a light touch. I got many, not all, of the stains off my engine that way.

Most the time cleaning even with wax will turn it a darker gray hiding the stains. I just repainted mine.

Try Mequiar's paint cleaner and/or clear coat safe rubbing compound. You can then finish it off with a polish. Never use a carnuba wax. The engine heat will turn it yellow.

Whatever you do don't spray the engine down with water when detailing it. Your starter is located in the valley and if your drain hole is plugged up (and it probably is) it will submerge and toast your starter.

Don't use regular simple green or purple power as neither are great for aluminum unless 100% is rinsed off.
This is the over the counter version of the simple green product that is approved for airframe use and is safe no matter how long it is left on aluminum. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Simple-Gree...eaner/50386662 Exactly the same as the simple green extreme precision and aircraft cleaner but with purple dye and much cheaper. |
