I have a used (30k mile original) flywheel sitting in the garage. Does anyone know how to check and see if it is OK? Not sure if I'm keeping it or selling it, but want to be sure it's good.

Hans,
Don't know the procedure, but I know it is in the FSM. |

The FSM doesn't say much, just "check for excessive looseness" by moving the plates by hand. Seems to me I read somewhere there is a tolerance for how much movement there should be. X number of inches. Although, it looks like this one is OK. It only moves an inch or less and not real easily.

Install in car, rev to 7000K RPM and hold for 20 secs, repeat with clutch dump......exit vehicle, if you are as tall when you exit as you were when you entered the vehicle the flywheel is good. Sudden loss of blood is also an indicator of a bad DM flywheel.

Hans, Below excerpt is from the 1991 FSM, Page 7C-12. I am assuming your 90 manual should be the same. Distance should not be more than 1.378 inches. Hope this gives you more to go on. FLYWHEEL LASH MEASUREMENT Figure 12 Remove or Disconnect 1. Clutch cover assembly and clutch disc, refer to clutch cover assembly and clutch disc in this section. Important ? It is normal to rotate the primary flywheel against the secondary flywheel for a limited distance by hand. ? This is called looseness of the dual mass flywheel. ? This looseness does not impair the function of the flywheel unless it exceeds the specifications listed below under "Measure" which may indicate internal damage. ? Dual mass flywheel will produce a clacking noise if engine has rough idle. Before replacing flywheel for noise complaint, engine should be checked for misfiring or rough operation at idle. Measure ? For excessive looseness of dual mass flywheel. 2. Install 2 bolts which were used to retain the pressure plate to flywheel across from each other in the secondary flywheel. 3. By hand using the bolts to help rotate the secondary flywheel against the primary flywheel clockwise until all looseness is removed. 4. Release the flywheel and draw a mark on the secondary and primary flywheels. 5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 only rotate the secondary flywheel counterclockwise. 6. Measure the distance between the two marks, if the measurement exceeds 35 mm (1.378 in.). Replace the flywheel assembly. |

One more note. When talking with marc about the flywheel in #458, he said they wear concave and the center to outside tolerance was .015" max.
