Does my '90' have the ability to calculate when the oil needs to be changed, or does the light come on at a certain mileage. As a side note, it turned itself back off. TIA. - Steve

i'm 99% sure it's mileage based.

Not mileage based - it's a rev counter, basically. There's a complex algorithm based on number of engine revolutions, and oil temperature, and possibly some other parameters.

VetteMed, they could do that in 90 with OBD I? And, why did it go back out. Maybe it assumed I always drove like a nut and, well, I guess I always do.

Yep, as long as there's a crank position sensor, the number of revs can be monitored.
Not sure why it would have gone out, though. That's odd to me. |

Does it normally come on with "key on"? Maybe it goes out after a certain number of key starts? Seems unlikely. Maybe the bulb poped.

To check for popped light just turn the key on.
The dash lights all come on briefly.

My 95 LT1 car used to get around 5500 mi between change oil lights based on my driving routine. I'm expecting the same for my 91 w the LT5, but i will keep an eye on the mileage just in case. I don't really like to go over 6-7k on oil changes unless it is all highway.

I believe it. Mine comes on every 1,000 miles. I rev high allot. And mine drinks way more oil than 1 quart every 2500 miles. More like 4 quarts.

It is based on rev's and temp. However, it must be reset each oil change, and it is a bit more complicated then it is resetting the fuel milage computer.
