Default Considering new wheels for new brakes

I've been reading quite a bit about brake upgrades on the ZR-1, since that is the one thing that I've found a bit disappointing so far. I'd like baby to stop as fast as she goes.

As I understand it, most of the brake upgrades will have clearance problems with the stock 90 ZR-1 wheels. I understand a move to C5 Z06 type wheels will cure the issue.

I know this makes me "wheely stupid" but my question is what sizes should I be looking for? Or does it matter? What do I need to be searching for in new wheels? I figure the only thing dumber than asking a dumb question would be to buy the wrong thing and have it not fit. I have been figuring on buying somebody's C5 take-offs. I just don't know what to look for.

My son has 14.5" lingenfelter brakes on his, and he runs a-molds with a 1/4" spacer and long studs to get around it. For any of the other brake systems out there I have no clue.

I can tell you that if I still had the vette, and was going to order new wheels I would go with hre or ccw, then it is not an issue

Get OEM GM A-Molds (you get what you pay for in wheels, those are cheapies). You can fit C5/C6 brakes with no spacer and that will give you unbelievable brake power for little money.

You're probably already aware that the rear wheels advertised in that auction have a 50mm offset.

If you choose to purchase aftermarket 5-spoke wheels make sure you're getting rear wheels with a 36mm offset.

That's the kind of help I'm looking for, thanks Scott! All the measurements and stuff.... numbers were never my strong suit. That's why I went and got a job in computers.

I went tire shopping today and got about the pricing I expected to. The rep at one of the stores (Goodyear) suggested I look at going with 18" wheels because then there would be more sizes available and would reduce the cost of replacing the tires. Seemed an interesting prospect.

Are there any experts here that know what the correct tire/wheel package sizes would be for stepping up to 18"s ? ie: something that bolts on the car, fits nicely, doesn't rub.

You should actually look at the selection for 18" tires before you commit. It is not as good as it used to be. And there are more 17" tires available than there has been in a while.

If you are going to drop some cash on custom wheels go with 18x10 front, 19x12 rear - that way you can use C6Z06/Grandsport tires which should have a solid future due to relatively high sales volume.
