When you were referring to a dust boot I think most of us thought you were talking about the shifter mechanism rubber dust boot. The ZF6 trans has many applications and started life as a truck transmission. Looks like he ordered the wrong seal. As you point out the seal is a simple friction fit. No need to remove the rear housing for any part of this operation including the replacement of the seal.
