Default Re: SOCAL Tech Session 7 October

The tech session was a success. TF95ZR1 (Ted), Mike 100 (Mike), and Blackbelt (Mike) made it to Tnova's (Tony) house in Poway. We followed Marc Haibeck's newly updated procedures which made it possible for the four of us accomplish this while never having done it before.

Using the ATI damper 360 degree markings instead of the common timing wheel with the +/- 180 degrees caused us to regroup for a bit to interpret the values found to those in the instructions. Since my '91 LT5 has new chains and new chain guides except for the upper guide in the right head (see Marc's instructions), we compensated for wearing-in to the desired 114 center line.

We confirmed the sage experience of Marc in that +/- 0.5 degrees was about as close as we could get. Getting that final 0.5 degrees out proved to be too difficult with the variance of cam dwell, lifter return, loosening and tightening the cam bolt, and chain tension (despite keeping it taunt with manual chain tensioners). Final numbers are:
RH Intake 113.5
RH Exhaust 115.5
LH Intake 113
LH Exhaust 115.5

These should wear into the desired lobe centers +/- 0.5 degrees.

Prior to starting, the cams were set using the FSM pin methods. All were withing +/- 2.0 degrees except one which was 118 degrees vs. 114.

The day ended with grilled carne asada tacos and cold Ballast Point beer from growlers freshly filled.

All-in-all, a great learning and ZR-1 community experience.
