If you have the money get the Z. Granted the GS gets the same bodywork and trim minus the blower basically. But usually it's an entire package upgrade. Another consideration is that a slightly used C7Z is the same price, even a little lower than a new GS. Now the cooling issue comes into play. Word on the street is that the 2017 Z is getting revised cooling to cope with customer complaints. And we have the Zora possibly coming out in a few years too...So many choices lol.
I feel the same way. In 1993, I wanted the most bad a$$ Corvette around, but couldn't afford a new one so I got a slightly used '93 ZR-1. Owned ZR-1s for the better part of 20 years and loved them. Now, in my declining years, I felt I deserved an automatic and a warranty, so I decided to buy a C7. Thought briefly about a Z51 regular Stingray, which is a fine car, but went right for the Z06. Same theory. Looked hard at used ones (I could get a used car manager friend to find one at the auctions for $500 over) but I did not want the full boat Z07, plus there are always questions and compromises on a used one. I just wanted a middle ground Z06 2LZ with specific options like painted vents and no aero, and I discovered that with discounts available I could get exactly what I wanted for less than a year old used one by ordering a new one, about 10% off list. Which I did. The Z06 is incredible although you can only occasionally use all its power on the street. But a wonderful car. Will do a 2,000 mile plus road trip this spring after BG. If you buy a new one you also get a big discount on the Spring Mountain Ron Fellowes 2 day Corvette driving school near Las Vegas, which I highly recommend. I say go for the Z06--You only live once, and you'll never regret it. --Bob
