I don't know much on the history of upgrades, however, the noise has not been there for about 2000 miles that I have owned it. It always had the growl in first gear which I assumed was normal for a 90. The car does seem to shift fine. However, this is definitely the noise of something failing. It sounds like engine knock at anywhere above 40 and letting out of the gas while in gear.
