I think you're exactly right about the reward and they do know.
When I got mine he'd pee if you'd walk toward him.
At the pound they called him "shooter" for good reason.
After a few days and once he saw that I was not coming to beat him he settled down.
To this day he does not bark, except when he's dreaming.
Another side effect of the environment he was in no doubt.
