As has been mentioned several times. These are very fixable. On a scale of difficulty from 1 - 10 I'd put this as a 2.
A "1" would be changing you oil.

I too used thin inner tube to fix mine in 99. Hasn't failed again since. Others have used kitchen/bathroom cleaning gloves.
