Good Morning Andrew – Your conclusion about the missing tube is correct – it is a manufacturing defect. Looking at the photos I can see that it was omitted during the manufacture. The tube needs to be in place to direct the refrigerant to the entire core inside surface, following a prescribed path through the core in order to obtain the heat transfer surface needed to fully absorb the heat from the air flowing over the exterior fins.

I believe you had mentioned that you received two units and both were in the same condition – minus the internal tube. Do you have any information that you can share about the data on the carton label(s) or tags that may be attached to the units?
