Yes. I run most of the courses we have down here in 2nd. There's only been 1 course I could run in 1st, but I was still tagging the rev limiter at a couple points and you have to be VERY careful with the throttle...really easy to blow the tires off accelerating out of a corner with the LT5 at 5k+ 
If you haven't run many short course races, it'll probably help for you first couple runs to short shift into second and just leave it there so you can focus on your lines through the corners and not over power the rear tires too easily.

Jordan, by blowing the tires off do you mean smoking them out of the corner?
I sure wouldn't think the tires would come off the rims, but maybe I'm wrong.
