For the most part the ZF6 is a really great transmission.
There are many out there still going strong after 30+ years.
They can handle ungodly amounts of HP and Torque.
They may not be a M22...

The backfire might have popped off the pvc hoses when it popped off the hose on the Map sensor.
Also check the fuel regulator vacuum hose, it lives on the bottom of the fuel pressure...

Ive read that 84 1989 model year pilot ZR-1's were produced for display and testing.
They are easily discernable because of their wheels having center cover caps and hard pipe plumbing of the PVC...

My '90 does something similar, but not as extreme.
Approaching a stop the idle is around 1400rpm, once stopped for a few seconds the idle drops to 800ish.
Ive always believed it was smog related...

Had a similar issue on my '90.
I removed each actuator, cleaned with WD40, applied a little silicone lube to the gears and put them back on.
Problem went away.

I had a very sililar problem some years ago. In my case it was caused by me back probing the injector pins at the ECM plug. Big no no.
