Helicoil

I noticed 2 bolts are not holding torque for intake plenum.
I was thinking about using helicoil inserts.
How difficult a procedure is it? Could someone who had done this before share the experience?

Thanks.

Re: Helicoil

Its very easy. All you have to do is determin the next size up screw thread up from what the stock one is and you can buy the helicoil kit that comes with the correct drill size and tap. It all comes with istructions on how to install the coil. You can keep it metric or english. At this point it's your choice. Here's a link to a drill tap chart.http://icrank.com/cgi-bin/pageman/pa...echart.htm&t=2 Just use this chart to determine the next thread size up from the stock one then get the helicoil kit for that size thread.

Not difficult once you get the hang of it. You should be able to Google it & have it explained better than i can here, TBO. Biggest thing is make sure to drill straight into your work, if it's crooked or cocked from the start, well... it won't come around on it's own. As i like to say...if it's not straight & true, you'll be blue :o.

Question for those who has done this already for the intake plenum:

1. Anyone know correct thread size for intake plenum(torx head)?
2. Since the opening is slightly larger on the top piece, could this be done with the plenum in place?

Thanks.

I believe its a T-45. And on your second question! I wouldn't. Its easy to take the plenum off and get it out of your way. You don't even have to unhook the throttle cables. Once you get it off just set it on you drivers side tire.

I meant english or metric and thread pitch and size of the torx head bolt.

Re: Helicoil

Bolt size is 8mm dia x 1.25 thread pitch

Replace with the same size metric only. You don't want to have 2 different size bolts for the plenum.

Tape up the injector housing ports to avoid drill cuttings getting in the wrong place.

There are different brands from Heli-coil of the same device.

Like Ryan says, keep it straight.

Re: Helicoil

I installed one in the aluminum oil pan for the drain plug on my E-Type Jag. I had never done one before and the thought of drilling a big hole in it scared the hell out of me, but it turned out to be very easy. I agree with the comment about covering/plugging anything you can to keep the filings out. If you have a helper, you may want to consider having them hold a vacuum hose where you're drilling to keep the amount of filings floating around to a minimum. Good Luck!
