Leaky Transmission Output shaft Seal

Just confirmed a small oil leak back at the transmission output shaft seal.
I understand this seal is common with other GM transmissions under PN 10140538. To get at it the drive shaft and exhaust will obviously have to be removed. Does anyone know if the seal can be replaced without having to unbolt the transmission tail housing?

I replaced mine when I had the trans out. The driveshaft must be removed & the seal can be r&r'd. Make sure the trans surface the seal sets in is clean befor installing the new seal.

Re: Leaky Transmission Output shaft Seal

Picked up a new PN 10140538 seal at the local Chevy store and put it in today. To get at it I had to remove the Corsa exhaust (the flex joints I added sure make removal and reinstallation easy), unbolt the C-beam, and pull the drive shaft. Bill Boudreau sent me a note confirming that the transmission extension housing did not have to be removed to replace the seal (thanks Bill). I was able to pry out the old seal using a small pair of end cutters and a flat blade screw driver. The old seal was somewhat brittle and a 1/2" section appeared to have become un bonded from the outer shell which was the source of the leak. The new seal drove in without a hitch. Put it all back together, topped off the transmission oil level and took it out for a short test drive. So far every looks dry with no sign of oil leaking past the seal. Total repair time was about three hours.
