Please help diagnose popping sound prior to "diving in"
1 Attachment(s)
Hey All,
Can you help point me in the right direction with a few "check this out" before I start tearing into things? My '91 has about 85k on it and runs smooth with all original (except shocks) suspension components. I'm getting an intermittent driveline noise and if feels/sounds like it is clutch related. Here are the "symptoms:" 1) Intermittent slight "quick metallic popping" sound. Reminds me of the sound my rear hub shaft makes. (I've taken that thing apart several times to no avail- I now just look forward to hearing it) 2) Seems to be only when I take off from a start, only "pops" once- occasionally and non predictable. Cold or warmed up, makes no difference 3) Feels like when I'm more aggressive (not burn out aggressive) I get the noise. Starting easy and releasing the clutch slowly and there is nothing. 4) Never get the noise in any other gear. 5) No driveline vibration 6) Clutch feels normal and fluids are good At times I wonder if my dual mass flywheel is having "moments" as the sound "sort of, kind of" reminds me of a "clicker" version. I appreciate any direction- I know that diagnosing sounds is difficult! |

I had a weird noise like that, it went away when the suspension was greased. My other thought would be a half shaft u-joint that is worn.

Has the C Beam been out? Re torque the C Beam bolts and see what happens. If that's it get a set of Beam Plates from ZF Doc.

Thanks guys. I'll check both the C beam (I never would have thought to check that) and the u joints along with a general inspection. Plus it never hurts to give everything a shot of grease.

Also check the rear wheel hub washer. As the Teflon tend to wear the popping continues

Does Jerry carry those washers?

Yeah, I've replaced the washers in the rear and it still pops. I went +10 on the torque and it did not seem to matter.

watching thread, I would like some of those washers too if anyone has a source and part# (but only after the OP gets theirs first).

Does anyone have a new or good used one that I can sample from for material analysis & dimensions? |
