Powder Coating Question

I plan on having a local shop powder coat my plenum, cam covers, etc... Besides taping and plugging the ports and faces is there anything else I should be aware of that their powder coating process could potentially damage and what I should look out for? Also by chance does anyone know of a powder coating shop that has done an LT5 before in the Atlanta area?
Thanks,
Scott

Re: Powder Coating Question

I would suggest you have someone who has done them before to do the job. Proper preparation and coating procedures vary depending on the material being coated.
Having been around a coating facility in our manufacturing plant, I can attest that re-dos are difficult. In most cases we would just scrap the part instead of attempting to correct a mistake in the coating.
This is not something I would want to risk with the items you want to have coated.

I wouldn?t trust my plenum and cam covers with random local powder coater.
Leegaff did mine.

Just my thoughts. When I had mine done by Marc he painted them and its held up great 6 years ago still looks new, no issues at all. I have seen some powder coating that has chipped and peeled over time maybe due to improper prep.

Re: Powder Coating Question

I second what Steve said. I, too, had Marc do the engine on my '95 when he did his 510 package and he said he always painted the engines (i.e., had a local paint shop do it). He said he tried powder coating and did not have as good results with it. Mine turned out beautiful and looked like new up to the day I sold it (sadly), about 4 years later. -- Bob

FWIW: my powder coating is holding up well.
Make sure the powdercoater takes extreme care
on the mating surfaces of the cam covers!!!
Think it over about powder coating the throttle body.
It's gotta be dis-assembled and may never be the same again....
Just a good clean up and paint?

I had my throttle body powder coated first and sent it over to Marc for 63mm conversion. No issue.
Leegaff ported the plenum and injector housing and powder coated in 2014. After 7 years and 35,000 miles later, still looks great.

Have done multiple sets with Josh Putnam here in Houston. He is meticulous and I've never had any issues with his work.Attachment 15320
