Anything unique about a LT-5 Alternator?
 

The bearing in my alternator is a bit noisy, so I?m thinking about changing it while everything is apart. Is there anything different about them, or just standard GM?

Have it rebuilt. It's a simple job.

Try and really isolate the noise and make sure it's the alternator . I made that mistake with my 96 LT1 coupe. I have that alternator sitting in my parts collection. I was sure it was the alternator and swapped it out. Upon starting the car the noise was still there. It could have been the power steering pump or possibly the ac compressor. I even tried the screw driver trick and it sounded like I could hear it coming from the alternator. I would try a stethoscope or maybe removing the belt all together and turning each accessory pulley including the water pump.

It is the alternator. The bearing feels rough. But we are checking the other stuff too. Good reminder to get.

Is there a great guru of alternators, who could rebuild it with quality parts, and perhaps up the output some?

Im sure you can find a local auto electric shop to do it. It's an easy job. I've done them myself in the past.

Only thing to be aware of is our Alternators are the early CS-144 housing.. there are 2.. Early and late, the Late housing will not fit in the 'pocket' where ours are installed.

I rebuilt mine with better parts to output a bit more power, along with an additional 8 gauge wire back the the distribution terminal and adding all the LEDs.. it all helps
