New ECU project

http://www.liferacing.com/?page_id=120

Going all the way to a standalone motorsports controller. Is it necessary, of course not. But I want to eliminate the ignition module and run 8 x COPs.

A little constrained on outputs, unless I add the expander. So I might run it as wasted spark initially.

Should be fun!

looks like a nice system. what made you go this route instead of the raptor megasquirt?

I agree that an aftermarket ECM can really help tuning one of these beasts especially with rowdy cams

good luck todd and keep us posted

how much is that rascal?? are you keeping the stock ecm to drive the gauges?

will it 'play nice' and talk with the CCM?

Just wanted something different, with a bit more functionality and flexibility. The Raptor MS seems like a pretty good option for some. In my case, I wanted to eliminate the ignition module, and control 16 injectors sequentially without the added drivers, among other things. It will use a combination of alpha-n (TPS), and Manifold pressure (MAP) as the load variable for fueling and spark. The options are just endless on this thing.

Will be close to $5000 when done, not including my own time of course.

It will drive both the Tach and Speedometer, so won't need the stock ECU at all.

I plan to get it setup on a stock engine on a test stand first. Then use it on the engine dyno to map the 427.

...... <waiting> should arrive this week. Full spec F88 motorsport ECU. I plan to initially configure as waste spark, but eliminate the ignition control module altogether. Fully capable of coil on plug down the road if I can find some decent coils that fit.

brand new wiring harness required... unfortunately.

too many projects, so little time.

BTW, as far as I can tell, the stock ECU based on the Motorola 68HC11 chip runs at 2Mhz. The Life Racing unit runs at either 40 or 56 Mhz, I'm not totally sure. But it's fast!

2Mhz was probably state of the art in 1987 automotive controllers.

well, damn. they sent the wrong ECU. I was hoping to have something to display next week. The unit they sent only does 8 injectors :(

Todd,

Is the base software configurable or will you be writing specific code?

It's here....

Not much time to work with it until the fall probably, but at least I can start creating the calibration.
