State Highways To Run on
 

The penalties for speeding are so great here in Virginia it's looking like a huge risk to run the car past 80 mph though I've done well over that...a $3400 fine and loss of license awaits you and maybe jail time here..new laws in last 18 months by law and order dufus' in the legislature.

I am not going to do a drag race and don't want to get fully involved in road racing on tracks so I'm wondering something....

I see the 1/2 mile drag phenomonon that is emerging to let these cars out a little under legal conditions in parts of the country.

Is anyone working with state police to "rent" or "borrow" or be allowed to use a remote stretch of 3 to 5 miles of two lane or more highway exclusively for a day to let these cars run at 150 or so without fear of getting lambasted with tickets? A group of several speed enthusiasts working to get a road for a day type thing.

Anyone doing anything like this or do state police faint when you approach them?

It seems a shame we have to take huge $$ risks or limit the car to under 80 mph here in Virginia.

I really doubt that would happen. you'd probably be better off trying to rent an airport for a day and do the "va mile" or half mile or whatever you can get. I'm trying to do this in pa. texas seems to have the market cornered on this type of stuff. They also had the big bend open road race. dunno if that still happens or not though

Texas is so awesome. Not enough winter to go more than a week without taking the Z out and all us gun toten' beer drinkin' rednecks get to take our hotrods out and do 150+ on a closed public road. Pure greatness.

The BiG Bend Open Road Race near Stockton, Texas is one race of about 50 miles run out and back the same day or about 100-110 miles total in classes by speed. Objective is to match the speed for the course for the class you are signed up in as I understand it...closest one to the speed wins the class. navigator needed to help. There is another similar race, the Silver State Classic Challenge in Ely, Nevada which is 90 miles one way raced on about the same basis, class of speed, etc. Here is a 1999 link with a tuned lt5 ZR-1 running it. He is running at 162 mph averaqe and at times hits 200 mph with it as the curves, of which there are not a lot, slow you down so you have to make it up somewhere. You'll be very familiar with the cockpit that you can see.

I was thinking about shipping my car to texas next year and trying the BBORR but it's 1700 miles each way to get there, tons of rules and pre qualifications, etc. so it may not be worth the bother. However, if it were closer??????? it would be very interesting. I'd probably given how I drive cars enter mine in a 125 or 140 mph class just knowing that I don't push cars as hard as they go by a lifetime of driving habits but it would still be a big blast to let the Beast out for 100-110 miles.
