Technically no, they did not burn it down.
They did torch it though.
When it was repaired, it was painted white to hide
the scorch marks. To this day one patch of the outside
wall has been left unpainted as a reminder of this event.
When I went on a tour of the white house this was not
pointed out but I noticed it. Later I learned what it was.

One of the things I learned to appreciate on one of my trips
to India was that Indians feel a kindred with the US because
we were both colonies of England. Many there are prideful of the
English influence.

It happened during the War of 1812 but the year was 1814.

Before then Brits were tied up back in Europe with getting rid of Napoleon for the 1st time.
After sacking Washington they sailed up the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore where they had their asses kicked by the American defenders. It was during this battle Frances Scott Key gave us the "Star-Spangled Banner".
