91 Airbag
Any technical tips on removing the airbag????

Re: 91 Airbag
pull the airbag fuse in the passenger side access panel (the one facing the door). You don't need to look in the manual, it says 'airbag' under it.
Then you can take a small torx bit (don't recall the size) and remove the two screws from behind the steering wheel at 10 and 2 o'clock positions. they are at a diagonal angle on the early cars. If you remove the steering wheel in the conventional manner, do NOT over thread the jack screws as they will dig into the airbag yellow actuator device. lastly, don't forget to put the airbag fuse back in, the CCM needs that circuit alive or you may get a sys error and a no-start for some reason. |
Re: 91 Airbag
THANKS! Figured it was pretty straight forward, but being my first bag removel, I wanted to make sure. Funny how the older I get, the more I seek advice vs. digging right in and costing myself pain, heartache, or money!

If you don't put it back, you'll probably want to remove the SIR bulb from the dic display area since it will be on all the time.

Re: 91 Airbag
you can remove the SIR module and then there are 2 heavy gauge wires on on connector going in/out of the SIR module.. Jumper those and all is good..
I forget the wire color, but with the 1991 dash in my 89, doing this allowed the car to start/run and no SYS light and I also pulled the SIR bulb |
Re: 91 Airbag
Of course always unhook the battery, and also many systems have a 20 minute wait period after disconnect.......some ABs stay active for safety reasons for a short period after power is cut....
