ZR1, the king once more

Chevrolet has a few upgrades in store for the mighty 2012 Corvette ZR1. One of which is a set of optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure Tires. Coupled with the the Performance Traction Management (PTM) system, the 2012 ZR1 is going to be one fast grippy guppy. Chevrolet wanted to find out how the new car handles one of the worlds most exciting roads, so a trip to Germany and a ticket to the N?rburgring were in order. In 2008, a Corvette ZR1 ran around the infamous track in 7:26.4. The 2012 car blew that time away with a 7:19.63 blast around the 'Ring - that's a six-second improvement, for those who don't feel like doing the math. <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5yKb6iSWc0k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and if that link doesn't work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yKb6iSWc0k |

It seems that when you have an engineering staff that is very bright and actually likes what they are doing.....the impossible just takes a few minutes to accomplish. to the corvette engineering team! |
Re: ZR1, the king once more
I very much would like to take a spin (or at least try to) in a PTM equipped vette. the part about having DOT runflats that last 3k miles seems like cheating, but I guess a select few can afford to feed that beast, a couple of G's on tires twice a year won't put off the person who pays cash.

Those were run flats!?!
Jez, what would it do with real tires?....heck, belay that. What would it do with a set of R compound tires. |

"I saw on a mailing list this morning that there are insider rumors and gossip about a companion ZR1 at the 'Ring that day that did a 7:11 lap. It apparently had wheels and tires borrowed from the C6R racing program, some modified suspension components, exhaust and stripped interior. It was to test capabilities of the PTM at even higher grip levels for the possibility of selling a track optimized version of the ZR1. Writer categorized it as rumors, but he is a reliable source." |
