U Joint Strap Bolts
Well, after my first battle with the bolts I picked up a set at MADVET. Went to install them, and they threaded in easy, but then they were nearly impossible to turn. I noticed they were coated in a blue material on part of the bolt, wondering if the combo of corrosion and the material( I assume some sort of thread locker) did this.
Anyone else ran across this, last set I put on was easy, but they were old bolts. |
Re: U Joint Strap Bolts
probably the thread locker doing its work

Yes, I purchased a set of straps and bolts from Dennys Driveshafts and the bolts all had a blob of green thread locker and yes, very tough to turn. I broke a 1/4 in drive socket trying to turn them. I finially put the old bolts back on with a good coat of liquid locktite instead. Rich |
Re: U Joint Strap Bolts
Thanks, I feel better, wtf I needed about 100ft lbs to turn the damn things

Re: U Joint Strap Bolts
Check to make sure the thread pitch is correct and if it is metric or inch.
In this particular size metric and inch bolts are almost identical in appearance and either one will thread a long way in the wrong size bolt hole before binding up. I had the same problem when changing my u-joint strap bolts and this is what I discovered. |
Re: U Joint Strap Bolts
i will check, these were specific for the 86-96 Corvette

Anywayz...the point is obvious, but dittos on the metric vs English: Had the same problem on my 95 Vette - ended up using the old ones too. (I did find some later at Mid America Corvettes tho.) But, speaking of that blue thread locker, other than mild resistance - like threading a fitting over a pipe that has teflon tape on it - nothing like what you are discribing and certainly wouldn't break a 1/4" drive installing it! FWIW. P. |
Re: U Joint Strap Bolts
could be, these were individualluy packaged with the 86-96 and part # listed on the package.

Re: U Joint Strap Bolts
Pulled them off, turns out a lot of corrosion in the yoke, this combined with loctite on them made it hard to turn. Shot some PBR in there and then some WD40 and ran a bolt through them a few times, no problem!
