JVD BBQ/20th Anniversary Afghanistan

My name is Eric Egelstad and some of you might now I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne Division, Ft. Campbell KY.

I want to say hi from Afghanistan and to thank you all for the kind words you said to my parents and wife last night at JVD BBQ. I heard the video was awesome and left some of my family teary eyed.....

I sincerely hope you all will have fun this weekend, I sure wish i could be there with you all. But as some of you know, duty calls.

Jim, thanks so much, it sure did mean a lot to my wife and parents what you did for us all, and it was a surprise for them.

Do you think i could get one of those BOWTIE burgers when I get back? What i would do for a good ol Cheeseburger!!

You all be safe and mostly, Have fun!!!!

Eric

Hi Eric

Not American. Not Canadian, though I live there. British by birth. But I still had a tear in my eye.

The world at the moment seems sadly all too lacking in the kind of belief and care that people like you display for patriotism (whatever your home country happens to be), for democracy and the belief that we can make the world a better place for everyone.

I don't really have a flag to salute you by. Displaying the British flag in Britain is apparently 'racist', (Sadly this 'racist' aspect seems to have crept over to the US recently as we have seen mentioned on these forums) displaying the Canadian flag is accepted and widely done, but we aren't yet Canadian. Neverthless as one person to another, I salute you. The care, patriotism and willingness you and others like you display when you put yourself in the path of danger to support those ideals.

As my favourite author once said "The next level in moral behavior higher than that exhibited by the baboon is that in which duty and loyalty are shown toward a group of your own kind too large for an individual to know all of them. We have a name for that. It is called "patriotism." "

Wishing you and all your family all the best for the future. Look after yourself and each other.

Dave

p.s. Jim hid 8 bow-tie burgers for you - I believe they're all veggieburgers though! ;)

Veggie burger would do right about now....well maybe not quit yet, maybe next month.

Thanks for the message, it is a tough profession to be in, especially when you have a wife and kids. I have trained with British troops before and I will take my hat off to them any day, true professionals and great Soldiers.

I appreciate the kind words and can not wait to get back home.

Eric

don't tell me all your eating is MREs!

If your chow is not being made by Marines then your already ahead of the curve so it can't be as bad as it could be.
