VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

Is this the VSS that people are talking about on the listserver? It goes in the side of the transmission. Sounds like it's a part that should go in the box of spares. NLA from GM or Delco. Marc says they can leak or just not work.

Re: VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

That looks different than the one my 90 has. I didn't notice the mounting brkt(?) on mine, or maybe I just can't see, or maybe I was looking at what I thought was my VSS and it wasn't the VSS.:sign10:

Mine, if I was actually looking at my VSS:o, looks like a small can with a female plug. I know the ones for the 90's have been NLA for a long time.:(

Yes, and some folks bought out the entire stock that was left on Rock Auto after that email went out a few days ago.

Are the ZF6 VSS's different from the automatic ones? Cus my ZF6 VSS in the '93 I had looked different. Was bigger and had a green gear on the end that the transmission drives. Got one brand new from Autozone a year or so ago, had no problems getting it. Don't remember the brand.

It looks like this is only an issue with the 90 ZR-1s according to this email and the ZR-1 parts listing. I hope someone will chime in that knows if we don't need this specific part number and why:

Re: VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

The device pictured at the top is definitely not a VSS. I just looked at the one on my '90 Z, looks nothing like that. Looks the same as the one in my '93 I used to have. This is what the VSS looks like for the ZR-1's and the standard coupes with the ZF6, picture taken from kragen.com & does not show the gear that goes on the shaft (I don't know if the automatics are the same or not):

Apparently there are 2 different types of VSS, D9A & D9B (I also saw a D9E listed on Autozone.com, but it was listed as unavailable). I think the codes denote the number of teeth on the gear that goes on the sensor. One of those codes will be listed in the RPO code list under your console lid. My '90 Z has D9B. You can get a D9A from autozone, kragen has D9A's and D9B's. They aren't cheap though.

Thanks for the research and sharing. Good to know they are at least available and I'm glad I bought mine from Rock Auto before they were all bought out; I guess those were wholesale prices they had.

This looks like a crank sensor, not a VSS.
If it is a VSS it looks like a 4L80E trans speed sensor.

Re: VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

Not sure where all this miss information comes from sometimes, but the VSS for the 1990 is available. If by some miracle, all GM dealers are now sold out, just pop into your local advance auto parts store and order part # S8048 which is the same part VSS

The correct part GM # is 25007224

Part number that is been referenced here as 25007308 is discontinued as is different in the fact it contains the VSS AND the gear, whereas part # 25007224 contains ONLY the VSS and NOT the plastic drive gear.

Just order part #
25007224 and switch out your old plastic drive gear when removing.

The 91-95 cars are different connectors and are less than half price of the 1990
