trouble with my zr1
Since i am new at this forum i thought i could tell you guys a little bit about my car and it might also explane some of my troubles with it.
Its a 89 mod zr1 low milage its been rebuilt and is a convertible now, the guy that has done the rebuilding has not done a good job when it comes to the cabels and routing. I have used a couple of weeks getting the car up and running(it was not complete when i bought it) have been reading alot on this forum and learned very much. First test drives went great ful power and a big smil on my face but today my vacuum pump for this secondery system went silent , i have no power to the pump, is there a unit that controls this pump or a relay somewhere? Also got code 61 and 22 any thoughts from the experts ?? |

Re: trouble with my zr1
Code 61 & 22 are telling you that the secondary solenoid is not functional.
<stolen from a un-named internet forum> When DTC Code 61 sets, engine rpm is limited to 3K. A vacuum sensor located under the plenum monitors how much vacuum is applied to the secondary actuators. By monitoring the Vacuum Sensor voltage output, the ECM knows how much vacuum is present. During Full Power Mode when the secondary solenoid opens, the Secondary vacuum pump turns on at around 41 kPa/ 12hg to supplement engine vacuum. DTC61 will set if the vacuum drops below 21kPa. During Normal engine power operation DTC 61 will set if any vacuum is present at the secondary valve actuators. DTC 61 will set Secondary air inlet valves are commanded closed (Secondary Solenoid closed) and vacuum sensor signal is between .74volts and 4.89 volts. Secondary air inlet valves are commanded open (Secondary solenoid open) and vacuum sensor signal is less than 1.7 volts. ECM monitors the secondary valve actuator sensor on the ECM Red connector Pin 12 a Gray/Black wire. Here is everything you need to know about your secondary port vacuum system: http://corvetteactioncenter.com/foru...ad.php?t=14272 There is a 10amp fuse in the Instrument Panel fuse block, I don't know exactly which one it is. Re: trouble with my zr1
Just a shot in the dark on the vac pump. There is a replacement part from a truck that GMC makes that will work....I'll look up the part number and post it for you when I get a chance...you have to change the plug on the pump as it is not the same as the set up in a ZR-1 wiring harness, but the pump is the same pump with a different P/N because it is from a GMC truck....oh, forgot this: a VW V6 Golf(?) or GTI(?)V6 uses the same pump also. It's a german brand pump, Bosch maybe???
Anyway, your pump may have stopped due to mositure corroding the pump motor. You can take the pump apart and disassemble the motor to clean it up and reassemble and it just might work....I did it to mine & so far it's been good. It's a really simple electric motor and simple wiring that will require some soldering skill to take it apart & reassemble. A little contact cleaner aerosol and some WD40 and some 1500 grit wet paper or crocus cloth and I used di-electric grease as a lube & moisture barrier is all you should need. My motor seized up & toasted the plug, which stopped the pump from working...and it didn't blow the fuse...I even got away with cleaning up the plug contacts and didn't have to splice in any new wire. Just a thought , if the fuse for the pump is good, unplug the power connection at the pump and look to see if it is semi-melted. If it is, chances are that the motor froze up from moisture intrusion. Tom |
Re: trouble with my zr1
I think the pump is ok but its good to know its possible to get a replacement pump,i took of the plug and measured the power with the vacuum hose of and i have 0 volts.
From reading other threads i understand that this pump should be running non stop with the hose disconnected, i wil start with replacing the fuse(they all looks ok ) and see if i have power in , if there is power i am thinking a bad cable somewhere between the fuse box and the pump. I dont have the manual ,i have ordered one and its on its way, can someone tell me which one of the fuses that goes for the vacuum pump? This link is very good it help me understand how it all work :) thanks http://corvetteactioncenter.com/foru...ad.php?t=14272 |
Re: trouble with my zr1
Wow! You should really get that car up to show condition!
What's the story on this car? Did you drop an LT5 into a convertible and when did you do it?! Also, if this car is an '89, how did it get a '90-'92 dash? Tell us the story!!! :happy1: |

I had the same questions. Has to be a vert wide body conversion. I was looking for the Atari dash as well. GC :) |
Re: trouble with my zr1
The front end is 91 0r later and the rub strips are different, so there is a little miss match but damn still very very cool. Looks to be very close to being finished and can be really nice if all the parts can be found, would be really sweet to have the 8k digi dash.:worship:

Re: trouble with my zr1
This car was imported from usa to germany where it was owned by a doctor that had 6 other vettes,i am not sure where these modifications has been done, a friend of mine picked it up in germany .
I have not looked at the chassi number jet, i got it for a good price. Your right about front and rear are 91 style from ecklers front lights are in the mail from corvette central(the old ones where mounted with building foam:thumbsdo: i cant have that), but i have a problem getting the molds on the side of the rear bumper, anyone got a pair to sell me ? About the dash , i thought all zr1 had the same dash and the digi dash was on the standard c4 early edition. Is there any list to compare chassi nr to see if its a genuine z?, maybe this car has been crashed and thats the reason for both conv and front, rear bumpers. |
Re: trouble with my zr1
Just post the vin # on the lower driver side portion of the windshield.

Re: trouble with my zr1
Isn't that interesting....those pics...If you want help you have to feed the animals first!! You realize this could be a car of significant history & so people in the "know" need to know what it is. Give Jeff the VIN & after the hoopla I'm sure things will settle down and some serious questions can be answered... :D

Hi , here is the win number GM : 1G1YZ23J8L5800165
Let me know if anyone have any historie on this car. I will look for that fuse to night, thanks:handshak: |
Re: trouble with my zr1
You guys just saved me a lot of time, i found it and it had popped, the pump started up but didnt stop, put my finger on the pump and it stopped.
At that time i thought **** the plenum must of but for once i had some luck ,the hose from the pump towards the plenum was leaking,i replaced it with some silicon hose i have for another car and the pump stopped for around 5 min than started for a few seconds. Thats the way it should be right? Its raining so i have to wait with the test drive but i think this should take care of my problems .:) I think the hose was the first problem than the pump has been on for a long time and the fuse popped. |

Re: trouble with my zr1
Went for a test drive today ,no error codes :) and engine was running smooth all the way to 7.5 rpm, i just love that power and sound :dancing
Its something about this car i cant stop smiling when i drive it, i must look stupid but its just a feeling i get. Do you guys know if there is any stronger frame/chassi in the original convertible verses the hatchback type?? Got the service manual today, man that thing is huge i have reading material for a year. |
