New ZR-1 owner... just introducing myself>>>

Jim asked me to say HI! to everyone...so here we go...
I purchased an extremely nice 90 ZR-1 (#566) on Thursday...drove in home here in Reston, Virginia. I presently own a C6 Lingerfelter 366 (known as MR BLU on the CorvetteForum) but I have always been taken by the ZR-1... everytime I would see one I knew one day I too would own one and the search began and ended yesterday. Here are a few pics of my red on red (yea I know it is the more common color combo but I love the looks  ) :
Some specifics: 1990 #566 with dual tops and auto AC: miles at purchase 1327; fanatically maintained with constant fluid changes, new tires, all seals (door and rear lid) perfect condition etc etc. I consider it a real find:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...U/ZR-1hood.jpg

I have started the detailing and a few upgrades...but I really want to keep this one OEM within reason (unlike my C6 which has numerous upgrades)

Look forward to seeing fellow ZR-1 owners so I can learn from you...so here is to spring and driving weather and meets!
Michael

You should plan on attending the "Gathering" in May in
Bowling Green , Ky.
You will learn more about your car there, in a long weekend, than
you would in a year, not attending. plus, you can put faces here, to the
names, albeit, some are better left lets say, "unviewed"
enjoy your new ride.

Re: New ZR-1 owner... just introducing myself>>>

Well..what a nice welcome:thumbsup: I did just receive the book the 'The Heart of the Beast'..digesting that now. I also started my major detailing of the car and due to the condition (as stated in my first post) I am just 'fine tuning' BUT finding all sort of interesting stuff:
-I found the build sheet on the gas tank but was so fragile only was able to retrieve part of it..lots of build info etc and even though it is a partial (about 1/3) and it will be laminated. Then there is the build sheet in the front cross member which will stay in place.
-This is a hoot..really...about 2 am last night my mind bolted and began a "duh"... my C6 has no jack/no spare tire/no lug wrench etc and the ZR-1 has that and I did not check to see if they were there at time of purchase..so first thing this morning I go searching and what a find...the spare tire/jack/flat tire bag were all there and never opened or touched after 17 years..when I opend the bag for the flat tire bag the smell of vinyl came out as if new>>
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...U/ZR1parts.jpg

Now to the spare tire.. totally untouched and when I cleaned up a bit this is what came out>>> 17 KOH
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...R1SpareKOH.jpg
King of the Hill spare!
I have worked on the interior...found the original hand brake 'how to use' sticker and the dealers lincense plate (under the drivers seat) so here is an update interior shot>>>
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...R1interior.jpg

And I am now also focusing on the engine bay...that is the next week's effort and again starting off with a great condition ZR-1
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...engineview.jpg

I am one that documents everything I do to a car..if you guys feel that you are bored etc let me know and I will cut back...

Keep us updated. We really like pictures and I am enjoying yours. As far as the build sheet, I also saw mine and tried to remove it, but figured it was worth more attached. You can get a build sheet from the Corvette Museum if you'd like a whole one. Looking really nice.

Remember, no washing the motor, and almost anything will stain it.

Congrats, look like a nice clean ride.

I used to be out in your neck of the woods. I went to Fork Union and has a few friends that lived in Vienna and Oakton.

Re: New ZR-1 owner... just introducing myself>>>

As said, you can get a build sheet, and also a window sticker, from the NCM. You can also get a 1990 sales brochure, and the ZR-1 specific sales brochure at the same time.

The car looks great! That interior is quite glossy though. Some people like that so perhaps it's intentional.

Everything looks so new! Be prepared for the spare to get really dusty really quickly though. I've cleaned mine a few times and had to use it a few times. Within a few thousand miles it was totally dust covered again. I keep a large trashbag in the car so I don't have to use that tire bag in an emergency.

As said, be careful when cleaning the engine. Use mild products and don't hose it down.

If you ever want to meet up, let me know, I'm in Leesburg.

Hammer 12-29-2007 11:12 AM

Re: New ZR-1 owner... just introducing myself>>>

If the glossiness is a problem, try the Adams products VRT. I have used most all their products and find them to be outstanding.

welcome to the boards Michael:hello:. i have a 90 (1706) same combo as yours, wish it had the same milage as yours. your car is very, very nice. your other rides aren't bad either ha, ha. it's great your having fun & are pumped about the car & it's history. don't worry about posting too many pictures, i felt the same way as you, everybody on here loves to see, hear & talk about these cars, myself included.:handshak: .

Well...day one of detailing is complete..
Engine bay (and no water in top end of engine...know about that)..lots of Q-tips, gentle cleaner, and compressed air>>
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...ntleftside.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...neleftside.jpg

Did the undercarriage area to... boy does that spare tire carrier collect dust!
Here is the diff area>>
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...R1diffarea.jpg

NOW I NEED ADVICE>>>>
In this pic (driver side of engine) there is a device that have a pipe coming from it...looks like there should be a hose attached but there is none... anybody comment plz>>>
Red ---> is pointing to the item in question
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...deviceques.jpg

Jack points...rear one is obvious but looks like there are two possible jack points in the front... I have marked them as A---> & B---> can either be used? (I have a four arm sissor lift)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...tJackpoint.jpg

Also I have heard two very different views on jacking up car (again will be using a four point sissor lift... one is to keep all doors and hatch closed and the other is to have doors and hatch open...to me it makes sense to have closed... comments please

Lastly...when I remove the air cleaner assmebly a plastic shroud is located in the lower area where the cleaner assembly resides... here it is but I have it sitting on top so you can see it...it goes down in the area marked "Sits down here-->".. to me it restricts the air flow to the intake and also suspect it is a 'anti water' deflector type device. I do not plan to drive the car in the rain so why not keep this shroud off?? Comments plz...

Concerning the glossy interior...not sure what the prior owner used but I will be dealing with that...I use Mothers Reflection Leather car and Stoners Trim and Leather cleaner.

Last item...appears I have the drivers front speaker not functioning... never dawned on me the Bose system does not have a L R balance and only a fader......I am missing something??? Any stereo gurus here with some ideas???

Again thanks for the patience and any comments... great forum
Michael

[/quote]no hose. it's just left open. yours is correct.

Re: New ZR-1 owner... just introducing myself>>>

That thing is the AIR divert valve. It either sends air from the AIR pump to the exhaust manifolds, or out to the atmosphere. That open port thing is how it sends it to the atmosphere. It's perfectly normal, nothing connects there.

Edit, oh and if you are asking about the factory jack point, it's between the two molded in "arrows" there in your picture. Rear a bit from the "B" label.

That plastic thing under the air intake is to keep water out. I also thought it blocked fresh air to the intake. I kept it in place until I got the "claw" intake at which point I removed it. I've driven in quite heavy rains and not had a problem as of yet.

The Bose does not have a left/right adjustment. It's quite common for the stock stereo to experience all kinds of problems.

:handshak: Welcome aboard. Nice clean example of a ZR-1. Must the folks have already chimed in but they are 100% correct on the valve, the water deflector and the jacking points. . Your BOSE stero should have a left and right lever below one of the exisiting knobs. GC

Beautiful car, Ilove seeing them detailed out like that. I took that deflector out and put it aside, cant see where it serves much of a purpose.

Hey, us fellow red ZR-1 owners should team up and make sure the new kid on the block isn't starving for proper advise on how best to take care of his pretty new red Z. Besides I would like to get a closer look at that nice looking scissor jack he has set up in his garage. The weather forecast looks decent both days this weekend. If Michael is open to it let's organize a rendezvous and pay him a visit. Of course other color Zs would be welcome to join us.
