just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
As the title says... just a bought a 91 zr1 with about 15,000 miles on it and driving home about 1200 miles. Am i crazy?
Car has been stored in a climate controlled garage and has been driven yearly. It does have the original tires... that are not dry rotted to the eyes at least. Anything to consider? What to lookout for with these cars? Any constructive pointers appreciated. Thanks in advance! |
Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
Be very careful with the original tires. They are probably hard as rock and will have very little traction. Tires rot from the inside where you can't see it.
I have the 18k mile originals from my 92 and they were real sketchy to drive on. Sent from my Pixel 4a (5G) using ZR-1 Net Registry mobile app |

Yep, understood. Not looking to break any land speed records on the way home, hopefully a nice enjoyable ride. Thanks! |
Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
I occasionally put my orginals on my z and they handle and run fine if you drive it like a little old lady. Not over 60 mph. Should get you home fine.

I also have a 1955 Chevrolet which has the original spear tire and about 10 years ago had to run it for about 20 miles and it ran fine. It was a 55 year old tire at that time. Drove at 40 mph.

Avoid "get-there-itis" at all costs!
As others and you are already aware the tires ARE a concern. Hours of driving generate heat and that will exacerbate any weak areas of a 30 year old tire. If one should let go, particularly a rear one, the damage could be quite substantial. Those rear quarters and rockers are some of the most difficult pieces to find. Resist the urge to nail it. Those tires cannot possibly be trusted to do anything other than make you look like a puppy on ice. Why not arrange for new tires where you pick up the car, and ship the originals by UPS to your home being careful to explain the location of the TPMS ? Most all other failures are not too threatening and can be dealt with by someone experienced with monitoring the performance of a classic car and willingness to pull over at the first hint of an issue. A ZR-1 is new enough to make such a trip easily, however one that has lived such a dormant life style may have previously undetected woes. Have an American Express card with you and understand the trip may conclude with a car transport as you would not want to leave it on route. Enjoy the trip and the ZR-1! Vaya con Dios! Marty |

Maybe trailering it home would be the best option. thank you for your input. |
Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
I have several sets of NOS to extremely low mileage tires but they are only for show, not for go. Even if (there is) no dry rot...the steel belts are, by now, corroded.
Sounds like a great car but, since you asked, trailering would be a much better way to get it home. Congratulations! Mark https://i.postimg.cc/MptjG2dr/C63ABE...CDAEED7329.jpg |
Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
Trailering is without a doubt the best way to bring your treasure home.
You may then replace the tires at a known reputable shop. Then give it a thorough evaluation. Then you may begin the local shakedown drives, expanding your route as your confidence with the car builds and no anomlies are encountered. Far less stress on both the car and the new owner! Good luck and post up some pictures of your fun trip and of the car once safely home. We are here to help whenever questions arise. Marty |

Thanks... good to know about the tires and the belts within. Looking like renting a trailer is in my future. |

Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
So, just my own $0.02 worth of advice.
1200 miles on a garage queen is a recipe for disaster. At the very least, change the tires. If you're a NCRS kind of guy, save the old ones and slow boat them over the border. Make SURE to pre-ship a tool kit and enough spare parts you can afford, "In the Just In Case" you might need them along the way. Fuel filter, fuel pumps, spark plugs, coil packs, air/oil filters, etc. Then, get in it and drive it. Don't baby it. Drive it hard. It will do an honest 175mph. And do it for 24 hours. We will be glad to show you the proof. Your new baby will appreciate being rode hard and enjoyed. It seems that the harder you drive them, the better the ZR-1 runs. Enjoy the drive home, just be sure to watch out for the law. Somehow they take offense to seeing a 35 year-old Super Car at speed. Crabs |

Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
Lots of good advice here. But what I would suggest is that if you plan to go anywhere near the Chicago area, make an appointment to trailer it directly to Marc Haibeck in Addison Illinois (www.zr1specialist.com) for a thorough going over. I did that with my low mileage 1995 when I bought it in 2012 and he fixed a bunch of age related things including several I would never have thought to ask about. By the time he was done it ran perfectly. He could eve get you a new set of tires. Reasonably priced and the best money you could spend on your new Z.--Bob

If the injectors have not been replaced, you will need to have them done as well. Not sure how long it will take with today?s fuel, but they will eventually fail due to the ethanol. The later Z?s, [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji639]-[emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]], have updated injectors and wouldn?t be a concern.
When I bought my [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji638] it was down two cylinders due to this issue. |

If you have any grand jour thoughts of taking it to Haibeck you should call sooner than later. He?s usually significantly backlogged.

Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
My comment was don't drive on those old tires, are the very least they have no grip which is fun if you like the idea of braking the tires loose when your going about 35,not any fun if your behind a stalled clapped out turd at a stop light and you need to move NOW! Ask me how I know but I did manage to drift through the intersection, sideways looking out the pass window to see where I was going. This was on original tires that were 17 years old😳

Welcome to the madness! One more plug here for new tires, or trailer it. I vote for trailer since it's so far. Get her up to par and checked out, then she'll do 1200 miles no problem. Congrats!

Re: just bought a 91 zr1 driving home 1200 miles!?!
Personally I wouldn't drive an unknown car that far. I went with my Brother to buy a car a few weeks ago and I was hesitant to drive the car 200 miles home. On a side note, congratulations on the Z,you wont find a more dedicated and knowledgeable group of people the like the owners. I've had my car close to 20 years and I still love this car. I haven't drivin my car more than 200 miles in the last 2 years but it's there, just chillin, with a ton of crap stacked on it😁 You have a question about anything on the car, somebody will have an answer. Looking for a part, somebody will know where to find it,most of the time. I've watched prices go from the toilet to prices, and renewed interest to the car. I've thought about buying a new C8 but my car would need to go,that's not going to happen. I do know I need to get my car out of the garage and run some fresh gas through it. Welcome to the madness. Long Live The King.
