Headers installed

I got headers installed this last week. They have cats (random tech) and AIR tubes. I drove up to Marc Haibecks to have them done. I also had C-beam plates installed, and got the car dyno tuned. Marc also noticed the shift boot wasn't installed properly, so he fixed that and a loose drivers side exterior mirror. As part of the tune, he re-enabled the shift light and raised the redline to 7,300 rpm.

The car woke up noticeably! It also sounds awesome. There is more burble to the exhaust. There is of course also more noise and resonance. I'll have to see if I get used to it or not. Marc mentioned it seemed to have less resonance than the B&B with headers, and a little more than the '93+ pipes with Flowmaster 40-series delta flows.

Anyway, on to the meat of the upgrade:

That is really great to hear about your car......mine is going to Haibeck's on Saturday for header w/o cats also. Hope to pick up a couple of HP's doing so. I have the Power Effect Exhaust system so I really don't know what to expect for noise. Hope it picks up a couple of decibles:mrgreen: ....

Re: Headers installed

very nice numbers indeed . what exhaust do ya have ? 410 gears and top end porting really do the headers justice. get you into the 400s mine 409.9 and 373.3 tq with the top end done give you a perminate:mrgreen:

Re: Headers installed

wow...those are great numbers, for just an exhaust, headers and chip.
I'm am anxious to get my car back..Marc has it too.
i've having the chip and gears..and few other things done.
did ya see mine there? it didn't act real mean, I hope
my car does not play well with others..

Re: Headers installed

Very nice

I think you will adjust to the resonance by either getting use to it or adjusting your driving to avoid it.

Re: Headers installed

It has headers, exhaust, and a ported top end. The exhaust was featured in the previous HotB. It's the stock pipes with an LT4 resonator and Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers. From the back it looks stock with the square tips and black cans.

Keith, I saw your car there. It's *** was way up in the air. I could tell you drove it a few miles to get there, as it was almost as dirty as mine.

Go to bed already, you're gonna need to have your sleep patterns adjusted in a few more weeks for that 6 AM departure time to BG.

Wow Bob, those are some sweeeet numbers!

Do I understand correctly that you can have headers and the A.I.R. system? Did the headers come with the A.I.R. and O2 bungs in place or is that strictly a fabricate your own deal?

I gotta go find a second job. Hey Peaven....I got the slowest Z....but it still makes me look like this --->

They are most likely Watsons as they came with it. I have Watsons but don't need anything here in the sunshine state.

They are not Watsons. They are Stainless Works. Marc fabricated the AIR tubes, and he puts his own O2 bungs on the top vs the side, then sends them out for coating. I believe he's done a few with AIR tubes. Unlike the original AIR tubes, these are flush mount and do not protrude into the primary tubes. Looking at the originals, the AIR pipes cut right into the middle of each primary.

I guess next up is head porting, but I'll probably call it quits here. The cost for each hp just goes up and up... :)

When Marc re-enabled the shift light. Was he able to adjust the light for optimum acceleration? Enjoy the new power, Nice numbers.

That is good news to hear since many of our ZR-1 brothers and sisters live in states where inspections require it. Watsons use to be the only choice and since they are no longer made it was tough finding a used pair.

Due to the way the numbers are represented, you can't actually set it higher than 6,400 rpm. But it's set for that, and at least it comes on to give you an idea you are in the ballpark. Better than having the light just do nothing.

tomtom72 04-20-2007 07:11 AM

Re: Headers installed

Bob thank you very much for sharing the light!

Now I have something to look forward to. I'm in one of those states that sniffs the tail pipes & does a simulated city/highway load loop on rollers to test for emissions and they visually look for all the EPA mandated equipment listed in a manual...if you pass the roller test and don't have the EPA equipment then you don't pass...technically anyway. Now at least I know it is possible to have my cake & eat it too....as long as I can pay the freight!

Re: Headers installed

FYI
Send Marc your headers and he can add on fittings (functional or not)
to attach your smog crap tubing and Oxy bungs. Locobob also recommended another bung for easy access to computer tune.
I have my header set still sitting in the box in my garage. Haven't gotten around to installing them yet. Marc says they're gorgeous.........
I wish I was closer (actually Marc closer to me!) so I could have him do the work. Still can't get Jeff to fly down and do it......

Well wiseass(:cheers: ), for some of the faithful maniacs on this board it represents Admiral Blue ZR-1...but for me it means A Busted Zamboni....which is probably comparable in performance to my Z compared to some of the freak machines that I'll have to line up next to at BB in a few weeks. Let the pity party for poor ol' me begin.:-({|=

I'm just funnin' Keithy...I haven't accepted the notion that any poor/non performance by Blue has more to do with my 240lb arse than the car itself:o ....I remember the 1st time I lined up on the strip 20 yrs ago next to helmeted dude in a Firebird w/rollbar...*** whuppin commenced. The good news is that the rest of the night I proceeded to shut down a few Mustangs, Toyotas, and various other Family Trucksters....so my fragile self esteem was saved.

Ted, you can always head to Jeff's site and follow the directions for Nick's header install....just ignore the part that says "get ready to bleed"....at some point I'll prolly try to tackle that one with some help and a fully stocked cooler.

Ah Ha, Peaven I got you covered! If they take attendance at the drags on Wed I'll get a "forfit" for not answering the staging call! So I get the "slowest of the fastest" award automatically. Ha, Ha!!!

Every year since I got my Z I wanted to go to BG for the gathering. Everytime I put in for that week something goes way wrong at my job and I can't take the time I put in for!:-({|=

So I bought a ticket for the drags this yr and since I will not answer the staging call I will be the slowest of the fastest:p So you got it knocked!

Yeah, you can beat Keith. I anticipated a showdown at the BG drags, so I stuck a banana in his tailpipe while it was at Marc's.

Maybe I can get my wife to run the Aurora, so you guys can beat up on a family car.

Tom, sorry to hear you won't be able to make it! Maybe things'll change and it'll work out.

Just got back from Marc's and they just finished up Keith's car. He now has new gears so watch out for him:mrgreen:  Marc has 4 white cars in his stable. Probably the only time, other than the Gathering, that I have seen that many. Yes, the one from New York is still there but not motor. Another big cube engine being done by Marc.

I can't make the Gathering this year:cry:  so you guys/gals have a great time. Uly, you take care of Keith:) . Sounds as if next year might be held in Aug. Looking forward to meeting a bunch of you. It will be nice to put a face with your sign in name!!

Keith - one thing you have to do is get that engine compartment cleaned!!! When you pick yours up on Tuesday take a look at the good looking whine one next to yours with the Minnesota plate ITTL GO. That's what the engine should look like. Just funnin' with you buddy. Your ride looks good. I'm having Marc put headers on mine and a few misc. other things. I fly back down next Sat. and pick her up.

We have a fellow in our local car club that is taking mine this next winter and says that he is going to have a friend make a mold and start making them (if feasible $$$). Won't know anything for awhile but as soon as I hear something positive I will let everyone know. LEAVE mine alone when you are at Marcs..................[-X

I thought it maybe franks. the welds on his big runner 415 were cracked and leaking oil at the last gathering, so I thought it maybe his in there.
