FL or AL or TN: Emissions requiremets for 1990 and 91 Zs?
Looking to get out of Illinois for several reasons. My kids are in GA and FL so we'd like ti be closer and also among the Appalachians (the twisties, ya know).
The question is, whereas in rural IL, there's no emissions testing for OBD-1 cars in rural counties. The list of considerations is Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee = geographical candidates, and generally best tax rates for retired. But, what about emissions requirements for car registration for 90-91 model year vehicles coming into the state? Anyone know? |

No test in Florida for many years now.

Come on down to Alabama...thank goodness for Mississippi or we would would be last in everything...no emissions test here! If you hurry , you can help me put this 90 jigsaw puzzle back together. Huntsville, AL will be the largest city in the state in a couple of years!

One thing is for sure, your dollar will go a lot further in any of those states as opposed to IL. No big winter heating bill. FL has no income tax, so even more money in your pocket. Sounds like a win-win for Paul.

In NC, cars 1995 or older are exempt from emission testing and when the car is over 35 years old, no State safety inspection is required. The inspections are annually.

Good to know! Thanx for the info! (The Huntsville AL area is in the region we're most interested in @ the moment. Decisions pending still. Nevada too was one that my tax lady mentioned, along w/ SD, and AK. TX was mentioned too. But, emissions testing = ??? (I have headers and my AIR pump got crushed when I bumped into that road bank at the WANNAGOFAST event some years ago...:o)

Re: FL or AL or TN: Emissions requiremets for 1990 and 91 Zs?
Ga. only the metro Atlanta area tests. 90-91 years are no longer tested.

Re: FL or AL or TN: Emissions requiremets for 1990 and 91 Zs?
NV has no emissions testing for what are deemed “classic” cars 20yrs and older. No state income tax either. Stay away from Las Vegas, it’s become a mini California. The Reno area, where I live, is great! Not the hot dry desert like in LV. It would be great to add another member to the Reno group. We are currently 5.

If you go, Paul, we are going to miss you. But you better go soon to avoid the inevitable exit tax. Residents are leaving this fiscal wreck of a state in droves. Last one left here will get quite a tax bill. And my wife won't let me leave!--Bob

Re: FL or AL or TN: Emissions requiremets for 1990 and 91 Zs?
Paul,
Steve's earlier reply about GA emissions is spot on. Atlanta metro area of 16 counties have required emissions, but GA emissions are only required for the last 25 model years, so if my math is right, all C4Z's should be OK anywhere in GA. Georgia is tax friendly to retirees unless you have a boatload of retirement income. We retired in '04 and haven't paid any GA income tax since. You will want to carefully read the GA regulations for bringing (i.e. titling) vehicles into the state. The law changed a few years ago and I don't know the specifics but you might want to check what the tax impact will be for your vehicles and any other items of tangible value. I believe it used to be quite reasonable but that may no longer be the case ... just a head's up. You mentioned Huntsville - that's a very nice area -- also, much of the southern and/or eastern part of TN. I'm a bit prejudiced but I recommend you take a close look at any of the rural areas in the GA mountains ... if all your wish boxes are checked, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to relocate. And you can run the mountain roads almost year round. I've run the dragon in February with the snow falling - not the best of ideas, especially with summer tires, but it can be done. G- |

Maybe I should make plans to retire in that area and open a ZR-1 BBQ shack serving hummus on the side:)

I have a large track of land about 30 miles south of Atlanta I've had up for sale maybe I should start a ZR-1 only community and turn my 8sqK foot barn into a shared shop!!

Re: FL or AL or TN: Emissions requiremets for 1990 and 91 Zs?
My parents are in north Georgia (little town called Tunnel Hill). The have a really nice place on the top of a hill with a great view, 2 acres, about 2,500SF house with 2 car garage, and a detached 2 car garage (real brick like house, not a "shop"), which Zillow places at ~$270K value. They pay about $800/year in property tax and nothing in state income tax (no state income on Social Security or retirement income below $65K per person). Nice small town atmosphere, but only 25 minutes from Chattanooga and 2.5 hours from Tail of the Dragon. All this really to give an example of what you can get in north GA. The area and people are very nice, and it's really beautiful there. My plan is to move out there (from Dallas) in probably 5 years or so when I'm a little closer to retirement.

Re: FL or AL or TN: Emissions requiremets for 1990 and 91 Zs?
Hey Paul,
I've actually just relocated from the south suburbs of Chicago down to the Knoxville area. Not sure what the deal is regarding registration and emissions as I'm not in my house yet, but the area and roads are beautiful. Property taxes are very reasonable, as are home prices in most of the rural and semi-rural areas. We landed in one of the more expensive areas in Knoxville because we need the schools. I'm sure all of the areas you mentioned will be significantly more affordable and all offer better scenery and weather than IL. Chris |
