Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind...
An idle mind is......
Wilwood Forged Narrow Superlite 6R Big Brake Kit (front) 140-8337 Any one using them? Older posts here say 13 inch fit OK under 17" A-Molds? Worth the $? Street, occasional track day... (damn, they look nice!) Dust? Change rear to same compound pad D413. Wilwood says they work w/stock master cylinder? Change bias spring in MC? They look like they'd stop a freight train? Looks like best $ @ Jegs or Summit?. |
Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I put the complete 140-8337 front brake kit on my '91 with the 140-8314 hat and rotor kit on the back, retaining stock calipers in the rear. Wilwood originally said would work with the stock master cylinder however I could not dial out enough rear brake with the the bias valve I installed to keep them from locking up first. The spring replacement is the opposite of the direction you need to go because it puts in more rear brakes. Called Wilwood and they corrected themselves that '90 and '91 had small bore master cylinders and they aren't big enough to push the volume needed on the front for balanced braking. They added that even with a later model C4 master cylinder, I would still need a bias valve to take out rear brakes but it works. Again, no bias spring as that goes in the opposite direction needed.
My solution was to use the old school C4 racer's solution and put on a later model Camaro master cylinder that has a 1" bore. You need a spacer to between the mounting ears and brake diaphragm housing to keep piston rod depth correct. You also need to clearance the inner fender edge slightly so it doesn't hit the master cylinder reservoir. Brake end fittings and lines need to be changed too. A lot of work but my car now stops fantastically. Instead of going through the Camaro master cylinder swap, just use the later C4 larger bore master cylinders and it should work according to Wilwood but don't use the bias spring upgrade and you still may have to put in a bias valve unless you use the Wilwood rear calipers too. And yes, they fit under my 17" sawblades.

I’m running Wilwood Narrow Superlite 6R up front. I couldn’t check A mold on the front because I installed 14” rotors. But, I tried A mold wheel on the rear with 13” rotor and it fit. Also, check Wilwood site and perhaps talk to their rep to be sure. I’m running stock MC but did not change bias spring. The set up works great! http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24546 |

I keep thinking one of these days I'm going to pull one of my front Shelby wheels off and see if they will clear the 14" Wilwood setup (using the Wilwood template).

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I have the 13" kit int he front.. still using the OEM Master as well. I have a 92 master with the Bias Spring, but never got it installed.. I had a camaro master on my 89.. Wow that one worked well..
Still might do the master upgrade at some point |
Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I installed Wilwood 6 piston Superlites up front w/ 14” rotors and 4 piston Superlites in the rears w/ 13” rotors.
I think later ZR-1s had 15/16” bore MC. I bought a Camaro MC w/ 1” bore but concluded that I would have to rig up another brake fluid reservoir because Camaro reservoir did not have a nipple to accommodate ABS pump priming. Also, did not want to mess with re-routing brake lines to the opposite side. OEM MC works fine. I thought 1” would reduce the pedal travel and firm up the pedal but concluded it to be too much work considering all worked very well as is. |

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
Here's the C4 master cylinder bore sizes. I thought '92s were smaller also but they're not. My 7/8" bore '91 didn't handle it. Putting a 1" Camaro MC on is a lot of work as has been pointed out. I have a lot of "if I were to do it again" stories on my '91 and one of those would be going to a 15/16" bore with no line or fitting mods. Then again, my brakes with the 1" bore are really, really good.

I have a newer master I got with the DRM bias spring.. I would need to locate an OEM Spring to swap I think before install

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
Talked with tech reps from both Wilwood and Baer, both claim their systems work with the stock master cylinder... Don't want to get involved with swapping MCs or proportioning valves.
Due to several posts here, I still have concerns? Concerns aside, for now, I'm leaning towards the 4 or 6 piston kit from Baer. Pros: 1) I can use my existing Baer Eradispeed+, slotted & drilled 2 piece 13 inch aluminum hat rotors, saving several hundred $ 2) I can use my existing Russell SS braided brake lines with banjo fittings at the caliper. Baer uses this stock type connection and no NPT, Wilwood uses a tapped NPT on their calipers with adapters. To me, Baer has a better solution, not to mention the $ savings by not having to buy new lines. 3) The needed parts are available separately from Baer, Wilwood pretty much insists you buy the whole kit and are of little help determining the separate part numbers... 4) The pads that come with the Baers are compatible (?) with the Hawk HPS being run in the rear, Wilwood was noncommittal on this. Cons: 1) If it ain't broak, don't fix it... 2) Doubt if I'll be slowing from 200+ on the Mulsanne to 60ish for Indianapolis at Circuit de la Sarthe any time soon... (only in my mind...) 3) Still trying to talk Big John into parking in my garage... Next concern: 4 or 6 piston? 4 piston Baer cylinder volume is 3.89 cu/in vs 6 piston 3.937. Not much difference, concern here is for MC compatibility. The pad surface and rotor "swept area" is the same. They both fit under stock A-Molds. Gotta admit, the 6-pots look better than the 4s...and, theoretically are more efficient. |
Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I will say the Wilwood 6p I have are fine with the stock Master Cylinder.. that is why I have not swapped it yet

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
Everyone's driving style and use of their car is different. While the stock C4 brakes, even the larger rotor stock brakes, need improvement, how far you go is a matter of all the factors mentioned. Baer, Wilwood, or whatever doesn't really matter. What fits your needs.
BTW, all the components of the Wilwood kits are available as individual parts in their catalog but not identified as for Corvette. They actually don't make as many hats, rotors, and calipers as one would think. They assembly their components into kits usually with the most unique parts being the mounting brackets. Same for Baer, DBA, etc. |
Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
Doug, like you said, I doubt you'll slowing from 200 mph anytime soon.
This sounds a visual improvement more than anything. How do your existing look? |

My stock MC (92 ZR)works just fine w my C6Z06 brakes setup.

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
Finally made a decision...
Do I really need "race car" brakes and the potential headaches with MCs and proportioning valves etc.? I guess not... Not to mention saving over $1200... :) So.... I'm going with just "pretty" (probably what I wanted all along)? OK, go ahead... harass me... :o Rebuilt calipers in red powder coat front and rear from Keen Parts. Ordered the parts today, should have them in a couple days. With the existing braided stainless lines, Baer Eradispeed rotors F & R and Hawk HPS pads, I'm arguably as far as you can go performance wise with "stock" type brakes. And now, they'll be "pretty" too! ;) Gonna have to withdraw my LeMans entry form, hope I get the entrance fee back... |

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I can only say I love my Z06 brakes. Converting to them is a bit costly since it requires at least 18” wheels F/R. I originally started w just the fronts but went with the Street Shop conversion for the rear for aesthetics. Not an inexpensive piece but what the heck.
Having said all that, even street driving changes. There’s simply no occasion that I have encountered where I have needed to stand on the brakes. I typically STOP sooner than I expect to. With much less effort. Not trying to convince anybody, just trying to give my observations of what the bigger brakes are like. |

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I’ve been deliberating this thing for quite some time. This thread has just helped me make up my mind. I don’t need race car brakes with giant calipers and rotors. Even a C6 Z06 setup is an easy $1k or more. The C5 Z06 setup just doesn’t get you much improvement. I just don’t drive the Z that way often. A good set of rotors and Hawk HPS pads on our 13” front J55 systems should be plenty. I do want a little more bling. I just picked up a nice like new set of 96’ GrandSport calipers. Should give me the bling I’m looking for with minimal installation issues.

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I was seriously thinking big brakes until I did the DRM brake bias spring. That alone made a noticeable change to how the brakes feel. Yes, they still feel like 90s brakes (not as much initial "bite" and needing more pedal effort), but way better than stock which was to heavy on the front during hard braking. I think at this point I could just change to an aggressive street pad (currently running PowerStop Z26 ceramics) if I wanted more stopping power.

Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
Hans,
I would leave the Calipers Black for your red car.. it will be a nice contrast. Then if you are motivated use the caliper paint kit for the rears, it is brushed on but works great. I need to paint my rear calipers to match the front, but it has been low on the list |
Re: Sitting here in the doldrums of Winter and this is the thought that came to mind.
I actually bought both the fronts and the rears from the GS (it was actually a CE LT4). They are painted black as well. I’ll be changing all four out. They will stay black. I like the contrast look too. The rears are the same as the normal J55’s already on all ZR-1’s. Since my car has such high miles I figured it couldn’t hurt to change them as well. The doner car had relatively low miles.

Mystic ZR-1, those are nice! I am in the middle of doing mine right now. Did you rebuild the rear calipers as well, I am waiting on the rebuilt kits to come in. Everyone says not to rebuild the rears but my piston boot had a hole in it.. I coated mine with the G2 caliper coating.. so far so good. This is a shot of it drying , next is after the dry.
