Titanium??
 

Does anybody know or using Titanium mufflers.
I was looking at these mufflers but i don't know what CP2 Titanium is.

If anybody knows what CP2 Titanium is please post up and what would the difference in weight be to a B&B stainless mufflers.

Pete,

The C5 Z06 had Titanium mufflers at one point. And so did the
SR-71 Blackbird.

I've owned 2 C5's - a 97 that had the ZO6 titanium exhaust and an 02 ZO6 that had the stock titanium exhaust. I liked the sound and read that that it was very efficient (i.e. changing to another exhaust rarely gained more than 3-4 HP. Yes, it was lighter - perhaps 1/2 the weight of stainless.

CP stands for commercially pure and means of designating titanium grade.

“Commercially Pure or CP titanium in unalloyed. ... CP Grade 2 titanium is widely used in heat exchangers. CP2 is one of the most common titanium grades, with properties that make it a good candidate for chemical and marine, aerospace and medical applications.”

Actually the entire bird was 93% titanium. Pete, a number of companies make automotive exhaust systems out of titanium. Armytrix comes to mind but others do also.--Bob

Ah...the SR-71 did not have mufflers, however, it and many other aircraft have titanium in their structures, skins and engine parts.

The C5 Z06's Ti exhaust was developed by Arvin, an exhaust supplier back then, and TIMET, at the time the world's largest supplier of titanium raw materials, and weighed 41% less than the base C5 muffler system. In fact, from a flow standpoint, the Z06 exhaust was not significantly different than the base system. The performance advantage came in the Ti exhaust's reduction in weight.

The two biggest weight reductions in a C5 Z06 were the tires, which trimmed 23.4-lbs and the Ti mufflers, which trimmed 17.6-lbs.

Another interesting fact is that a 2001 Z06 weighed 420-lbs less than the best performing stock C4, the ’95 ZR1, which explains why the '01 Z06 with less power and torque was quicker than a stock '95...and, I might add, the main reason I had the late Jim Van Dorn do his "Automasters Street Skinner" engine package on Barney. In its final form, Barney's "SS" engine made 513-hp SAE, enough to keep me ahead of those pesky C5s.

Hib,i think windshield/windows were thinner on the C5 ZO6 over C5 coupes.

17 lbs is a bunch from mufflers i'll take it :)

Wasn’t Titanium a big deal in the mid 90’s since the former Soviet Union was dismantling many of their ICBMs in compliance w Nuclear disarmament treaty?
Scrap titanium was showing up on the market in quantity, I believe.

As others have stated, the TI exhaust is really a nice piece. Although I've swapped my ZR1 exhaust to a SW/Corsa system, I left my 04 Z06 alone. It really sounds great; the factory got that one correct!
