C8 Mid-Engine Motor
I’d be willing to bet that the motor for the mid-engine C8 is a derivative of this new Cadillac twin cam V8.

Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
Seems like a good bet. The General will need to put that engine in more than one platform to justify the development costs.

That will make it special. (not) Prepare for a ZR-1 C-4 Deja vu' all over again. Maybe they can put the Vette rear lights and bumper on the Caddy............... The whole idea of a Halo car is you leave the Halo on the ONE Car! Marty |

Sorry Marty but I think the 4.2 TT DOHC motor will be a lot more special than a OHV in block cam’d truck motor like the LT1 or its supercharged version LT4. It looks like its using some pretty neat technology worthy of being included as part of the evolution for America’s Sports Car. |

Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
Altho I believe the Corvette version will not be a hot V. The CAD drawings for the C8 that were exposed by ZERV on the Corvette Forum show exhaust tubing that was more conventional. More room in a mid engine to route exhaust outboard of the motor.

Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
In the past I’ve read that in order to get the approval for the C8 GM had to share the ME platform with Cadillac to offset to developmental cost so don’t be surprised if that ME camo car at the fast food drive through is in fact the Cadillac.

For anyone like me who is not familiar with the concept...

Ford's 6.7L turbo diesel is a hot V set up.

I sure hopes that’s not the motor going in the car, can’t GM make an attractive motor anymore? Even the base LT1s in the 96 Corvette was simple, nice to look at.

Geez guys are you not reading the posts in this thread? #10 has a link that explains what “hot V” is and it’s history.:icon_scra

Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
Lots of innovation there. When I look at this package, I start to have maintenance heartburn. Beginning to look like Ferrari packaging and would require the engine to be pulled for anything beyond oil and air filter changes. The Mercury Marine crate engine looks much easier to "work on".

See the exhaust exits on the 4.2 DOHC TT, perfect for both front engine and mid engine applications. |

Any DOHC motor really needs ease of access for cam install/timing and cylinder head work. But u already know that 🤗 That SBC 4 is awesome because of the LS7 bottom end and the belt drive cam system. Not to mention its nit any taller than an LS motor. 750hp NA. Wow! |

Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
Officially they claim the Cadillac motor won’t power the Mid-Engine.
http://www.thedrive.com/news/19742/c...te-report-says I still think that’s just corporate speak. A different version of this motor will. Highly unlikely GM will develop two similar but separate motors of this type at the same time. H  |
Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
Well so it seems Cadillac is tacitly acknowledging the existence of an ME Corvette platform.

Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
BMW has had a Hot V setup since 2008--ten years. Seems to work OK. --Bob

Hans, I think the Corvette version of this motor will not feature a Hot V config. For packaging purposes, it doesn't need to be. Any pics of the camo'd ME, show the exhaust tips on the outside corners of the rear nd and not exiting the middle of the car as they do now. This is also confirmed from the "unofficial" CAD drawing that have been posted on CF. Look at where the exhaust headers are placed. |
Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
Hope GM conquers some of the issues BMW encountered with their hot-v setup. There is a good write up at the eEuroparts blog which sheds light on the fire-sale pricing of some of their recent models on the used market.

556hp LSA in the 2nd GEN CTS-V and the 580hp LSA in the Camaro ZL1 along with the 09-13 638hp LS9, all blown 6.2 liter GEN 4 SBCs, though I will admit though they all share the same basic architecture, the LS9 does have some prominent "goodies" separating it from the LSA. Maybe the 550hp Cadillac 4.2liter/256cid TT DOHC engine isn't outputting enough for the new C8 Mid Engine Vette. It wasn't long ago when the 5.5/336cid liter version of the GEN 5 SBC wasn't approved for the new 2014 C7 due to insufficient low rpm torque for a car of Corvette caliber when in V-4 mode, hence the 6.2/376cid displacement was retained. Though the CT6 V-Sport which is where the 4.2 TT DOHC engine will reside, is no small car, and being a Cadillac wont be a lightweight either. Though it's 10 speed automatic could help offset any low rpm torque insufficiencies. I wonder if/when the Cadillac XLR program might be restarted at Bowling Green? The new 2019 4.2 liter TT DOHC will be made at Bowling Green, so they wouldn't have to ship engines far. |
Re: C8 Mid-Engine Motor
The CAD drawings of the ME show headers that remain outside of the motor unlike the manifolds on the Caddy which appear to route exhaust to the V valley of the motor for the turbos. Whether that’s the final config, we’ll need to wait and see.
