Anyone from FBI land in my area?
I have to admit that I am a noob with Corvetts in general and ZR-1's in particular. I just cut a deal on a Z and got it shipped in from California.
I've restored several cars over the years and I am not too bad at it. I would just like someone with Z experience to go over the car with me and help me figure out a few things. The car needs a lot of work, honestly a lot more than I was led to believe. I need a little perspective to prioritize the project, decide what I need to fix immediately and what can wait. I had planned to be driving the car a lot this late summer. I don't think that is going to happen. Dan |

You are in the heart of FBI land! Several gurus just .minutes away.
What is on your agenda today and/or this weekend? What year ZR-1 is it?? Paul |
Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
I am retired so my agenda is wide open, today & all weekend.
The Z is a '91 with a '92 engine. This is an out of control project car. I am overwhelmed. I could use some perspective & recommendations. Dan |

Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
Hope you didn't pay too much for it. Can get very expensive to get back to great condition even if you do all the work yourself and there is a small upside on value.

Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
Paul Workman was just here, he tested out the systems and most everything is ok, drive line wise. I do have a laundry list of minor repairs to do, but nothing expensive.
Noises from the engine, trans & clutch asm are considered normal for these cars. What a relief! Thanks a lot Paul! |

Looked like a nice car that just needed a handfull of things. Great to hear it's mostly sorted out except for some minor stuff. Welcome to the Brotherhood too! |

There is a lot more wrong with the car than the seller admitted to, but it is fixable. The interior is toast, baked in the southern California sun, doesn't look like it was garaged at all. But I now know that the drive train is in very good condition, thanks to Paul. The HVAC system is totally dead, as are both seats. The seats, inside door panels and carpeting are all real bad. |

Yeah. I think that car is going to be a keeper! Looking forward to seeing it after the restoration (interior) is complete.
Good luck, Dan! And, congratz on your "project"! |
Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
It's great that Paul was able to give the car a look. Mine made some sounds I wasn't crazy about so I sent it to Marc H. He found some little stuff and cleared up some other small things I was already aware of but mechanically all was well. I'm glad someone experienced was able to say "Normal engine sounds" or I'd never have had a minute of peace with the car. The cosmetic stuff isn't too bad to do, glad the mechanicals are good and hope you are enjoying your car soon.

Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
Every piece of interior carpet has to be removed & replaced, it is all damaged. Paul gave me the pointer of using a heat gun to remove the old. Anyone else have any ideas? I think the carpet will be the most labor & time intensive part of the project.
The part that is really bothering me is that the K&N air filter doesn't fit correctly. The engine can pull dirty air from around the edges of the filter housing. That's probably been that way since the engine upgrades, 12k ago. |
Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
Because the rear compartment in the rear of a Z is wider, the standard carpets are a little short. Call your supplier before ordering. They may have to provide extra carpeting.

Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
I have rehabilitated the interior of my 89 and my 90. I know the inside like the back of my hand.. I would love to see your interior and have you check out mine for ideas if you want..

Re: Anyone from FBI land in my area?
Just got 1 seat out, 1 to go....
The center console looks a little intimidating. Save that for tomorrow maybe. Carpet pieces are not easy to get out, at least so far. The new materials are not here yet, any day now. I could definitely use some pointers on how to install the new carpets and what sequence works best. Where to glue, where not to. The seats and doors will be 2-toned black & gray, that should look good when done. The carpets will be gray & floor mats black. Paul is helping me out with a contact for a new headliner, that will need to be done, but that will look great. How do you peel away the carpet where it is glued? Any tricks, shortcuts (hopefully...). |
