Latest mods.... the 90 is coming together nicely

The Corsa's are in the mail !!!! I closed that deal yesterday.

I've been trading parts with -=JEFF=- the last few weeks. He made me a down in one harness for the drivers door window and a new CMHSL LED replacement and.... traded me for some 94 leather seats which I installed this morning which makes it feel like a new car. While the door was apart I replaced a bad door ajar switch, repaired the drivers side power mirror and installed a pair of LED lights for the back up lights using mirimoto blubs. That thread is over on Corvette Forum if your interested. Jerry shipped new neoprene black hoses and stainless clamps that were waiting by the door when I returned from LA very late last night. While this was all going on my mechanic friend was tackling the front rack install on my white 91. It was a full Saturday of car repairs and car upgrades. In other words a perfect ZR-1 day. Drove the 91 home steers better now. GC

Yep looking forwards to the new tags arriving soon. I also happily took a day off to rest Phil. I was pretty sore this morning lol.

In my opinion yes as its a sealed unit and ideal for outside the car applications. You will need the 1156 size for the reverse bulbs and you will need to nibb the socket down as detailed in the reverse LED thread started by -=JEFF=- over at Corvette Forum

Here is that link http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/...ight-leds.html

If somebody can tell me how to get a link on my IPAD which I use on the weekends... I would appreciate it.

Agreed -- www.theretrofitsource.com sells a viable product ... Brighter lights mean safer.

Today I replaced the front lens side markers. The LH front markers had cracks in the clear lens and the the amber lens. I am pretty happy with the result.

New lens

Old cracked lens is this due to stones.... age ???

Stress cracks in the Clear lens at the bottom ???

Looks like you are making great progress with great results.

I am going to touch base with your source of the LEDs; when I did my "whole car" LED conversion last year, the HID fogs I purchased from two other sources never worked reliably; one side or the other will illuminate, but rarely will both sides power up. I think I have eliminated battery voltage as the issue, and I am ready to try another product if these guys have something.

Good luck with the rest of the project.

I had the same problem with fog light HIDs I ended up sending back the kits. One side would fight the other for power. I went with LEDs about 5 years ago and haven't looked back. I am still running HID projector headlights on the 91 with those LED fog lights

Without a doubt. He has already done work on 4 cars in my family. This is the 5th He's my go to guy Phil and without a doubt your best recommedation to date. After removing the wing on the 91 he has gotten all the families paint work.

It's funny I have an electrical guy, a stucco guy, a paint guy hell even a neon guy.....

Who said tradesmanship is dead in the USA? I admit it's hard to find quality work at a fair price. All my guys prices are fair. That was keeps me coming back hell I even have a steel fab guy.

All I can say folks is invest local... If you can..... and in this club for ALL these reasons

Relieved to see that, Darryl; you've described exactly what I am experiencing. I had been led to believe my problem was unique. I see a transition from HID to LED fogs in my '91's future.

Not so. I know some folks had no problem with those kits however that was not my experience. I always wondered if a up amped alternator would have fixed the problem but I prefer the low power usage LEDs. I am thinking on LED headlights for the 90. But I have a lot of things to get to first and I am waiting for the price to drop on them as well. GC

The LED fogs do not produce a ton of light. The LED headlight conversion are awesome that I used. I made a post on here about it.

Re: Latest mods.... the 90 is coming together nicely

Sorry we're hijacking your thread, Darryl. The fog light conversion seems to be the most challenging of all the bulbs to convert to modern-day illumination. I got a note from Superbrights that their 881 should work as a replacement for the stock 896, but I was hoping the "simple" version of the 881 (LED with socket) would work; Superbrights referred me to the 881 version with the copper braid. Has anyone tried that version? It seems like a lot of product to stuff into the fog assembly.

I got the fog lights from superbrightleds and was disappointed with the result. They are not that bright.

I tried LED for lights and concluded that they were not bright enough and optic didn't work with OEM reflectors - light was dispersed.
I installed HID 6000k for fog lights and achieved level of brightness and color to match LED headlights.

This is why I retained my headlight projector HIDs. Even with factory halogens the bulbs were not that bright

Re: Latest mods.... the 90 is coming together nicely

I concluded high quality LED by name brand manufacturer designed with proper reflector design, such as GE or Trucklite, is as good as HID headlights. However, Chinese brand LED bulbs designed with no consideration to OEM reflectors look good when looking at the car but don't do much in lighting the road.

Which brand or HID 6000K did you go with - where did you source them?

I went with hidkitlights.com.

https://www.hidkitlights.com/chevrol...FQ5LDQodGncKGA

I have a 94 and bulb is inserted from below for 91 - 95 and bulb orientation is vertical. Note that 90 bulb is inserted from the back and bulb orientation is front to rear. I know it works for 91 to 95. For 90, I don't know. Also, you have a choice of bulb color and ballast wattage choice between 35w and 50w.

Thanks SC. That set up looks a lot like the CorvetteMods setup I have installed on my '91. Like GC wrote earlier, operation is intermittent; both fogs tend to flash on when you hit the fog light switch, but then one or the other will drop out. It's as if there isn't enough power available to keep both ballasts operating. I may try an alternator upgrade this winter, but I may try the 881 LEDs option and HID option you went first - it's an R&D project for now.

Re: Latest mods.... the 90 is coming together nicely

Concur the kit I used was also from Germany and high quality. But both lights would just fight for dominance. It was annoying so I pulled em.

I wonder if this is more shades of the grounding issue folks have had with the LED headlights on the 90 and 91 as the grounds are different. It may answer the mail on why the fog lights are a problem as well. Also why there seem to be no issues with direct plug and play with C4 models 92-96

I had no idea some we're having issue with HID fog lights until yesterday evening reading earlier posts. I ran my fog lights this morning driving into DC just to check and I did not notice any issue. Mine is a 94. I'll have check the electrical diagram but if headlights and fog lights are on same circuit, could HID head lights or halogen headlights sharing the same circuit with HID fog lights adding up to excessive draw?

Are you guys running 35w or 50w ballasts? Also, was the ground for fog lights isolated from high beam ground?

I was running the 35w ballasts on the fog lights before I yanked em. The headlights are 50w ballasts with the glass projector lenses that Corvettehid.com used to sell. GC

I have the 35W ballasts on the fogs too, but I have Nighthawk LED headlights. I don't have to have the headlights on to have the issue with the fogs (one illuminating, but not both); it happens with just the park lights on too. There may be something to the point made earlier about grounding not being as well done on the 90s and 91s. I am going to order the 881 LED CREE units over the weekend and give them a try. They obviously won't be as bright as the HIDs; if the difference it too much, I may put back the HIDs and look at installing a relay to see if a more direct path to the HID fogs would make a difference.
