Jeep D44 4.10 gears
 

Been looking on fleabay for 4.10s and noticed that Jeep uses the same gear for the rear. The Dana 44 gear listed has the same cross-reference #. Am I missing something because these gears are substantially less expensive. On CF someone commented that they had in fact installed the Jeep gear.

It might help if you mentioned a BRAND and PART # - some will direct fit, some won't and require some modifications.

Here's the fleabay link to the Jeep 4.10. It's a Spicer unit. In the notes u will see a X-ref to 2007772 part #

One describes a 12 bolt while the other appears to be a 10 bolt. HMM.

Dom,
You need the 29 spline HD pinion, not the girly 24 spline like the one shown in the ebay listing.
Otherwise you might end up like this example after your LT5 has its way with it:

BTW from what I understand there are some models of Jeep Grand Charokee that also use the 29 spline pinion as the the Corvette & Viper Dana 44HD.i

That gear package appears to be a potential "FIT" but I believe it's likely done with only 1/2 ring gear bolts OR it's multi pattern for 7/16 and 1/2 BUT NOT 3/8. I need to dig just a little deeper but some builds I find mention SOME early '07 builds were 7/16 and later all 1/2 and the differential case is recommended/suggested by Dana/Spicer when using.

I should be able to nail it I think. I've used only some Dana information to try and ID it for sure. The option was a "specialty" package offered for only towing and I actually doubt many CMC/Jeep people are very familiar. serious JEEP people for sure are.

***I believe it's likely 7/16-20 & 1/2-20 multi-fit and there seems to be many after-market equivalents that are very inexpensive. A buy might require confirming packaging!!

***I may have spotted one for something less than maybe $225 - much less LOL less than $200 from Summit

These later D44 JK Jeep builds I'd think need "ignored". In a later Jeep the D44 even though it's a 226mm ring gear the pinion is lacking. The pinion on the heavier Jeep is 1.25/24 spline where as the lesser JK is a 1.12/26 spline similar to the older conventional D44 (1.146/26) that used welded sleeve and specialty bearings for 'vette/Viper (Phil's snapshot is one of these). I had a 3.90 26 spline build that "recklessdriver/Will" on the CF beat on for a couple+ years and then finally bought from me. I loaned it to break-in one of his engines. I got it from Frank - it was a pretty damn tough rear. I believe it's still likely out there. The 'vette/Viper pinion is actually a D60 spec 1.276/29 spline.

If you're looking to buy a differential that's built you need to check the hex of the pinion nut 1 1/8 is the lesser D44 (1.146/26) - I'd say stay away unless it's a real deal! The D44HD hex I think Dana specs at 1 9/32 but 1 5/16 I believe gets it done and is the dimension most often mentioned.

I didn't check any further - as to the bearing surface diameters and lengths.

The MOPAR gear Phil pointed out is a good buy I'd think. These could still be some old NOS stuff machined in the USA. Maybe NOT!

Dave is correct about our D44 using D60 style 29 spline pinion.

My 93 Base LT1 car came with these gears (4.09) . Caravaggio was the one who worked on it and it uses the jeep stuff. Not sure of the details. I built a high rpm LT4 and dropped down to 3.73s so I tossed it all out. Held up really well. about 7 years... hundreds of drag strip passes and hundreds more street racing. Never had an issue.

I believe that "5ABI VT" build was an earlier conventional D44 with the 26 spline and NOT the later JEEP that you mentioned. There's much that indicates that, 4.09 mainly - his D44 might have been from a Jeep application but much "older" original 216mm ring gear builds.

No. I currently have the stock speedo gear in there and it reads ~4-5% slower now.

The Viper set uses a crush sleeve for setting the pre-load on the pinion bearings.
Also, the ring gear is a bit larger and in some cases the bottom the housing requires minor clearance grinding.
Which install kit did you get?

Haven't gotten one yet. That's why I asked. Not sure when I'll put the gears in.
All depends on who's available to do it and when. Thought I would take advantage of the price tho.

Your looking for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 1996-98 D44A for Jeep. We know it as D44HD. Nothing else from Jeep will work. The New Jeep 44 stuff is not compatible.
