carbon Fiber Roof Panel

While at Carlisle I met up with Dave from Melrose Glass and talked to him about making a Carbon Fiber Roof Panel for our Z's.
Dave has agreed to make the panel if we can get an order of ten or more. The panel will be complete with new hardware and weatherstriping.

Cost is 1500.00

Re: carbon Fiber Roof Panel

How much weight savings, if any, are we looking at?
I don't care in terms of total vehicle weight but more from the perspective of ease of removal and install.

OK!

A carbon fiber top would have to be painted; other wise the skunk stripes would look dumb!!!

Apples to Oranges. Im not putting orange writing on the roof either lol. I might be a player if painted. I dont think it would look great with the white

I am in - voted yes already. Light-weight, painted carbon fiber is just too good to pass up.

Yeah you might be right. The Carbon top does not look that good. :jawdrop:

Re: carbon Fiber Roof Panel

If you want the panel painted I would suggest taking your car to a shop that can image the color to get a perfect match. If Dave paints the panel chances are the color wont match.

Re: carbon Fiber Roof Panel

any idea on how much the top will weigh??

costs about the same as a CF hood.

sure would look cool, and it's not a bad price either.

like to see them do this, but unfortunately "I'm out" for now as I just dropped big $$ at carlisle

I should have been clearer. By painted, I didn't mean as in color match to the car. I meant as in whatever protective costing they put on the ZR1 carbon fiber exposed parts.

I am told a gallon of the clear coating (used on CF) is 60K, so unless the roof producer was using the coating regularly, adding the coating would probably make the top unfeasible. I am not sure exposed CF on the exterior would stand up well, and it certainly would not look as good as the unpainted (but coated) parts do on the ZR1 and other high-end vehicles.

Re: carbon Fiber Roof Panel

Has there been an estimate of the weight differential between this and the stock part? Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine more than a one or two pound difference. Is that cost effective?

Consider that, (unless you are using a damaged donor panel), you'd be spending $6-7 hundred for a donor panel, then paint. You're pushing $3K before it's done.

Re: carbon Fiber Roof Panel

if it's the same weight as the one that one of the major parts houses had at carlise 3 years ago it's substantial weight savings.

Bob Eyres 09-02-2013 10:15 AM

Re: carbon Fiber Roof Panel

But if reduced weight is ostensibly the reason for the new part. Why does no one seem to have an accurate number?

Is the tinted plastic panel, which I don't have, the lightest available panel available now? If so, then it would seem as if the difference in weight between the CF piece and the tinted plastic piece would be your CF weight advantage. The frame being the same, how could that be more than a couple of pounds.

I have both tops right now, so I don't need a third. It's a good idea but not worth the price to me, it might look okay just cleared. I can't see it being much lighter than the acrylic top either.

I will call Davey tomorrow and find the weight difference with the C6 tops.

Now that's more like it, I might be interested in that price. I think the top looked good on the white car IMHO. I have one that's the car color so I don't need another painted top, I think the carbon fiber looks good. I bought a used top a few years ago from Melrose and it needed paint, so I had about $1,000. invested in that top.
