Has anyone tried this X flow?

"X" flow supposedly should help with flow resulting in better scavanging. Down side has always been the dreaded drone. Looks like this piece may achieve better flow with minimal downside. Has anyone tried this? At leasy visually this piece looks like it may splice in for our Zs with minor alteration. |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
This is the first time I've seen that type of resonator. I like the combo of Xpipe/Resonator in one unit. But look closely at the size of the pipe on the inside compared to the outside inlets. It sure looks like it necks down to a smaller size inside. And for anyone with a genuine 3" exhaust, that's a no, no.
They say that the inside X is 3", but the illustration makes me question that. |

If the inside is truly 3" this could be an interesting piece. |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
It seems to me that the X design they have created would be very restrictive. On the inlet side there are two 3" diameter pipes for a total cross sectional area of 28.2 square inches. At the center of the X the pipe would have to be 4.2 inches in diameter (or some oval shape) to have the same cross section area. And there would need to be a smooth transition through the shape changes.

Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
Actually, taking another look at the illustration, area shared by the 2 pipes looks pretty substantial.
The whole idea of X flow is utilizing pulsing and resulting low pressure of pulse tail end of the opposite bank to create suction for the front end of the other bank. I think, if the inner pipes are indeed 3" dia., this could be a worthwhile piece especially for stock piece replacement. |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
Buy one and bring it over. I have a saws-all. We can cut it in half and take some measurements. :dancing

Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
There appears to be 2 variations of the Xpipe design.
One variant is made by slicing the sides of the pipes and joining them at the opening. The SW seems to be of this type. A second type utilizes a common center box with the inlets and outlets merged. Some of these appear to retain the individual pipe contour as they merge or x-over. Here's an example w 4" center to center. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...r#ht_500wt_689 |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
Dynomax ... Already tried it ... it "might" work but not without some serious fabbing. It's about an inch too wide to fit comfortably. When Corey installed my Borla Challenger 2.75 system I bought one to see if it would work but the clearance was so tight that we both agreed it wasn't worth the effort. I think it's a good idea but wish the fitment weren't such an issue.

I think before I do anything, I'll be putting the car on jackstands today and do some measuring. |

Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
Ok. Here's the dimensions I am working with:
Resonator. 18" Xpipe. 8" Overall length 28" incl joints Pipe spacing 4" C to C |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
I got my X pipe off amazon.com. Better price than Fleebay. I had the local muffler shop remove the resonator (borla) and put this in its place. They had to add some pipe to make up the difference in length. Its now quieter and has less drone than with the resonator plus I can now clear most speed bumps. Not sure how it affected HP

The Borla's have a sweet sound, but performance?...not so much. |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
related topic: Is there a good turbo muffler with a center in, dual or center outlet that fits a C4 properly? I want to try to replace my Corsa muffler with something a little more muted.
will the corsa pipes drone with a different type of muffler can? I love the no-drone, but I really need a little quieter car. |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
I don't think you're going to find anything quieter at anything other then WOT then the corsa's

I don't know if it would be quieter. Also, this has a LT1 tips. |
Re: Has anyone tried this X flow?
Corsas are are engineered pretty well to get rid of the drone. Why don't you call them and see what they say.
