Oil change
 

I understand that when you go to take the oil filter off when doing an oil change that the there should be a certain amount of old oil contained in the filter, if the valve is working correctly. My question is this, do you add oil to the new filter before installing it like you would in a normal car or just put it on.

Haber rj, I've not tried to fill the filter when doing an oil change and it seems to not affect anything. I agree about the filling of the filter, I used to do that on my 72 vette. I don't do it on the Z. I noticed that if I don't use the car for a week and start it up the pressure takes a few extra seconds to show on the gauge. The same thing happens when I start it up after doing an oil change, it seems to take a few extra seconds for the gauge to react.

Don't know if I should be filling the filter or not. I figure the car cranks so long before fire occurs that how much wear could be happening...I don't know?

Tom my reason for the question goes back to the information that was posted on the site about the AC filters (retaining valves) not retaining the oil when the engine is shut down. Apperently Mr. Herbeck (I am not sure if it was actually him) or his name just mentioned did a test or recieved some sort of information of the oil filters and said that the only filters that retained the oil after engine shut down was the Mobil 1, Fram, and K&N. The valves that keeps the oil in after shut down worked well. In my opnion (now I am getting brave) if the oil stays in when the engine shuts down, why would it not stay in when you put some in when changing it. I am going to try this when I change my oil in the Spring before taking the car out of storage. What filter do you use on the "Z",

Yes I remember the thing about the filters and the drain back valves! I made a mental note to use either GM stuff or Mobil1 M-207 filters. Mostly I use the Mobil1 M-207 filter and I can say that if I use the car enough I don't even get chain rattle on start up. Therefore I think that the mobil1 filter must have a good drain back valve. If the car sits for a week without use then I get the rattle on start up with either GM or mobil1 filters. I haven't tried any others because I can get the GM or mobil1 filters easily.

I haven't had the chain rattle in a long time and believe me my car sits for weeks, sometimes months. On to another subject the chain tensioners, have you ever heard of anyone changing those, and if so were they hard to do apperently they are only plastic pieces and one side is easier to change than the other. I think that I will also go with the Mobil - M207 filter, are these available at Auto Zone, we don't have Auto Zone up here, but I am alway in Buffalo or Michigan so I will buy 2 or 3 and keep them on the shelf.

Just put new oil filter in place , like on nornal cars , and start engine.....

I make it a good habit to fill my oil filters up with oil before installing a new filter.

FU2, I have to agree with you I do the same, but I haven't been doing that in my "Z" car. When I do the next oil cahnge I am going to put some oil in the filter and turn it upside down (over the garbage can) and see how much oil if any leaks or drips out, should be interesting

Let the oil soak into the filter. You will be suprised on how much oil will be soaked up by the filter media. After one or two filter changes you'll know exactly how much oil that can be put into the filter without it coming out.

FU2, I put approximately 8 quarts of oil in the car when I change the oil give and take a bit. So if I put say 1 quart in the filter, I just add 7 quarts to the pan or what ever it takes to reach the full mark on the dip stick, just like your normal car, what you put in the filter you the balance goes to the pan. I will try it and see what happens.

Note On Start Up Rattle...i Went 60 Days Last Winter...lots Of Start Up Noise...now Only 30 Days This Winter ..no Noise..zr-1 Is Happy...i Do Have Mobile 1 As Well...

I use K&N oilfilters and have start up rattle.. :???:

But ofcourse its gone after oil pressure gets up and it sounds lot worse on garage when you can hear sound louder.

Start up rattle is nothing after you have had broken valve spring and cam.. and ZR1netregistry info says that S U R is not problem.

Oh that sound serious, how did you manage to break a cam and a valve spring, I was under the impression that these things didn't happen to Z cars.

hi,haber,
in my line of work,(harley) the oil filter can be installed two ways...
between the oil pump and the engine,on the feed line,or on the return
side,between the engine and the sump.filling the filter is important
only if the filter is on the feed side of the pump,since being empty in that position means the engine will turn for a few seconds with no oil (sportsters)
if the filter is on the return side,between engine and sump,filling the filter is
not necessary.also,we always recommend changing the oil in the fall,so your engine spends winter with clean oil in it,and not with that gooey stuff full of acids and contaminents that can be harmful to metal parts

Good morning Blackjack, nice line of work Harleys, and great hobbie a ZR1, the best of both worlds, you lucky man. Thanks for the info very helpful, I haven't looked into the thermostat situation as yet but I will let you know if I find one. Hopefully I will have some time to get things all organized this summer.

This is exactly my situation up here or may be I am being a bit perinoid, but I envey you guys in the U.S., you have all the good tunners and have your cars running nice all the time. With me I have to do a lot of digging to make sure that I have all the info to inform the guy who is working on the car what might be wrong and what to look out for. Trouble shooting is deffinately not a strong point here when it come to the Z cars. Oh well with the help from fellow members I feel a lot more secure now than I did in the past and again I thank you all once again, isn't family great.

It was serious. Happend just 3 days after I got headers, RT cats and Corsa. Valve spring broke at freeway, I was not reving or anything.. It just start run really bad on lower rpm. After 2 months search at service.. Everybody did think that there is bad coil or electric problem, bad.. whats that module under plenium.. but after everything was check many times.. I even did order new ECM. They opened valve cover and find broken valve spring.. After sometime I heard that also cam is broken. Car did run really bad with broken spring so it might broke cam also.. Anyway.. That summer was really bad.. It can happend to anyone.. Valve covers were never opened before.

Last summer was also summer of mods..

Goodyear F1 Supercar tires
FX3 Shocks
Headers
RT cats
Corsa

After all there costly parts you really dont need broken LT5.

Hope next summer will be easyer and I can only enjoy driving. :thumbsup:
