Making Molds For ZR1 Panels

After Scott got rear ended, I began thinking about panel availability OR NOT?????

I have an extra rear clip and have decideed to make molds of the following panels for future needs by the Brotherhood. The molds will be as follows:

* Rear Upper Surround Panel
* Door Jamb Extensions
* Rocker Panels
* 1/4 panel between door and rear tire
* Rear Bumper

I will not make the molds until this Summer but I'll get them done.

Thoughts????

Re: Making Molds For ZR1 Panels

I hope you realize the cost involved in that venture. I looked into getting molds made for right and left side 49th street rocker panels. It was far more money than I was willing to dish out of my own pocket. Now if everybody from the forum was willing to kick in money to have them made that's a different story.
The other plan is for me to machine the molds myself at work on the big cnc mill. But id have to take mine off of the car and get them scanned/xrayed to extracted the surface contours so a model can be generated with solixworks or ProE then I can generate the cnc program to make the molds. Still a massive undertaking but still doable. $$$.

How much are we talking about for a mold of this kind?

Brett,these parts are still out there,one would have to dig a little but they can be found.The one part that seems to be the hardest to get is the bumper moldings for 91-95s.Ive got one complete side minus the small dogleg trim if somebody wants to make these.The dogleg trim from a base car is longer,can be shortened for a pattern for a mold if necessary.

As Lee said, I do make my own molds, so the cost of the molds is not that much. Just time consuming. I will do these over the next few months. I won't do a CNC mold concept. I make my own friberglass molds as well as some urethane molds for small parts. I have a urethane mold for the GS Euro flare extensions and also 1953 hood pucks. The fiberglass molds will be fairly easy.

I would be willing top make the 91-95 bumper moldings IF someone lets me use theirs for a pattern.

I just see a future need for these parts, going forward and no one seems to have made a comitment to the cause.

I agree with everyone - this would be a great move. Would be happy to contribute financially if that would help.

Thanks, Dave. No need to contribute $$. I have it covered. Being that I make my own molds, the labor is my greatest cost to absorb.

Jeff,i will use Dom's to reproduce them.

If Blue Flame makes these then i won't, unless they are overpriced.

In the mean time i will get a price from my guy.

Pete

Cool deal, if they are reasonably priced i would buy a set. I would not mind the later style molding on my 90.. only thing i would have to figure out is the front bumper and how to do it keeping the early style bumper.

I think the later molding holds better to age

I'm going to make molds regardless if Pete makes them. No biggie. I just want to have molds for all of the pieces. If it helps someone down the road, all the better.:cheers:

Another item of interest would be the ZR-1 filler plate for the front bumper.

Re: Making Molds For ZR1 Panels

Brett,

I have a full set of 92 moldings i can loan for a few months. Better to get them from one place rather than individual. think i have the dog filler moldings too.

But...... these have to be in the plastic as per OEM, is that how you intend to mold them, or was you going to make them in fibreglass?

pantera1683 12-14-2010 11:06 AM

Re: Making Molds For ZR1 Panels

Would someone please contact a 49th street rocker owner and inquire about sending them to Blue Flame?

Re: Making Molds For ZR1 Panels

Just a thought - would it be possible to acquire the original GM molds? Assuming they weren't destroyed or something equally errr... 'short-sighted'.

Dave

Guys, I will be making fiberglass molds and making these pcs from hand laid glass. The moldings will not have OEM plastic coating.

For the few that know me, they understand that having things that are rare or unique is what I'm all about. This is what drives me to make the molds for every wide body panel. I just want to have them. Who else has ever made molds for every wide body panel?

I'm not doing this to make tons of money, especially at somone's unfortunate accident. I don't need the money. I do pretty well on my own. Only a fair price for my time, expense and effort for whichever part you may need in the future. Market price.

If I can help someone in the future, it will come back to me. What goes around, comes back around. Karma, guys.:cheers:

Both 54's are currently rollers to be completed. The Fastback is the neatest one.

Here is the roofline and trunk lid panels that I made from my own molds. Also a pciture of the 54 Motorama car in the GM Styling Studio.
