4L80 auto ZR-1's
Hi All
Looking to see if there is any interest in these. I will be making 4L80E tail housings to convert any 6 speed C4 into a bullit proof 4L80E trans. Basicly bolt on the tailhousing to a 4L80E trans use your stock 6 speed C-beam and your stock driveshaft and go racing. These will sell for $650 Please reply here or PM me. Opinions welcome. Pete |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
Hey Pete, you need to post this somewhere for L98/LT1/LT4 guys that want the 4L80e
Might get a bigger amount of interest |

Pete, Interesting project. Do I understand correctly that the $650 does not include the 4L80E transmission?

Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
I buy 12 if $650 inculded the 4L80E too :p
Pete are you looking at just tail housing, right? No need for new output shaft. On the yoke are you cutting down a late model truck or ? |

I'm making these here in the USA :flag2:and the above price is cheap had a few other local shops qoute me you don't wanna know, they wanted double the above price each for 10 pieces. Seems most U.S. companies are hurting and they wanna make up on one costumer. I'm sure there is somebody out there that will do it for less just a metter of finding them,it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack.:) China will make this for $10-$20 each for 100 pieces. Now you know why China is kicking our butt. Pete |

No need to replace/new output shaft. No, you use stock yoke/driveshaft and C-beam. Basicly buy a 4L80E trans install tail housing install in car and reinstall your stock driveshaft and C-beam. You will also need auto shifter, cable, flexplate (i have),etc. If you wanted to text your friends while driving the Z, auto is the way to go.:) Pete |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
The jaw drop was for an auto in a ZR-1.
I think the price is cheap. |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
Hi Pete.
Give me the design and i will do it here in czech or Kuwait,i think cheaper . and ship it to you.:-D . 1- Can you tell us, what material you gona use? 2- Is this One piece casting product OR multi-welding pieces? Very nice Idea indeed!!. If i broke my ZF ,maybe i go with Auto! I made once tail housing for my Supercharged 86 Vette for TH400. |

Why re-invent the wheel? Scroll down to the bottom of the page. $599 on sale. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4L...4L80E_Swap.htm TomC 'Crabs |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
Tom, whats your point?
we scroll down, and found the adapter is to convert Auto trany-to Auto. Not from ZF6 to Auto. :o |

Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
If you read carefully you will notice that you have to use the 700r/4L60 output shaft (27 spline) and you are married to that trans what true hod rodder would want a 400/L80 trans with 700r (27 spline) output shaft.
It's doing it halfway. Also people are breaking the 700r output shafts. The piece i'm making you don't have to custom build the trans and you keep the HD 400/4L80 (31 spline) output shaft. Heck even GM knew better to put a big output shaft (31 spline) on all 6 speeds. So why do it halfway when you can do it the right way. How many hod rodders build 400 trans and change the output shaft to 27 spline from the stock 31 spline, seems like going backwards.:flag2: Thanks Guys Pete |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
when you see what the 480LE costs you won't be worried much about the price for the adapter
I know most folks LOVE the ZF box but when you start drag racing the car alot and trying to hook big power with the IRS, the auto really shines I converted my TT Z06 to auto (4L65E) and the conversion was 7k from what I understand the 480LE conversions on the ZR-1 run roughly twice that so it's not exactly a cheap mod but once you hit it with a modern slush box, all is forgiven on the cost front. really works well, just git and go:-D |

Who is getting these flex plates made , and are they still SFI approved. Are you looking at the a LS style converter or older LT style? What about the flex plate to pump room Do you know the depth ( do you have to run spacers on the front of the converter to flex plate ? ). Which controller do you like, I have little use time with the TCI box on a 4L80 As you might notice, I'm think of doing this now that the 402 is in the car.... |

Cant wait to see 1/4 mile times.

Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
i have installed a 4l60E trans in my zr-1 back in aug. 2004. At the time
i only made about 368 hp to the rear wheels, the 4l60E helded up for a while. The trouble was when drag racing it took to long to shift from 2nd to 3rd. So in 2009 i rpl the 4l60E with a 700r4 transmission full manual shift while SGC did a 368 550 hp pkg witch made 444 rwhp and 418 rwtq with the 700r4 trans. I raced the car one time before going to BG in apr 2010. it ran an 11.58 @119.70. no more racing till i came back from BG. well a week later and putting gas in car the trans broke on the way home( 3 miles away). The 700r4-4l60E trans will not hold up to the hp that i was making. so i will rpl the the trans with a 4l80E with a tail housing from pete, and reuse a lot of the parts for the swap. The only thing new will be the 4l80E trans and tail housing. Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
cool product !! :o
Q: what the Weight differnce between them, if we made the change? :icon_scra Auto will be less or same? |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
I never weighed them but i would say the auto will be a bit heavier.
With the 4L80 you'll never have to change the clutch :) Pete Quote:

Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
That looks really stout!
Just a curiosity question, could a 6L80-E be used? A 6-speed auto Z would be pretty sweet for daily driving. |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
the gearing in the 6L is crap.. It set up for truck. You would need 3.08-2.70 rear end, then you still have a OD thats out of wack..
You made a extra one, right Pete. |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
I'm pretty sure the the 6L and 4L have same dimensions, will have to ask my trans guys.
Bob,i have one more on hand and more on the way. Pete Quote:

Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
Phrogs the price for just the tail piece is $649.
Frank, your right it's mostly parts and some labor, labor is not all that much $14k sounds way too high,i would say about half Majority of money is parts. Your saving some on driveshaft and C-beam since you'll use your stock ZF pieces no mods needed, that's what so nice about this tailhousing Pete |
Re: 4L80 auto ZR-1's
Dear Pete.
I am interested in your project very much. I expect a report of the progress of the future work. |
