Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
Hammer is traveling from the west on his trek to BG. This morning he is experiencing an intermittent code 63 on his 91.
Any ideas for him? |
Re: Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
Code 63 is "Right oxygen sensor not varying" . Since it is intermittent I would be looking for a loose connection/broken wire.

Re: Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
Dennis,
O2 sensor could be grounding also. Has he done any work in that area recently? Any chance he's coming thru Chicagoland? |
Re: Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
It could also mean that the it's effective measuring range has ben reduced, a.k.a., on it's way out. I do not know a lot about the specifics on these cars, but if they are like a typical 4 wire I am used to then it coul be aything from the heater not working, or the volatge signal has become erratic. There is also the possibility, as already mentoned, that the connecton could be loose.

Thanks guys! He should be at my place in a couple hours. We will inspect and probably just replace.

Just for grins, check to see if there is any moisture in the wire connector. I had one get water in the connector...... bad miss problems on that bank until into open loop. Drove it 100 miles home in 4th @ 3200+rpm. if no miss, not the problem. The short is far worse than the open. C ya in BG |
Re: Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
We will check connections first. He has reported that he hasn't had the code for a while now.

Re: Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't expect that. I would have thought a bad O2 sensor would give you a hard failure. Glad to hear that the problem is solved.Hope the rest of the trip goes well!

Re: Intermittent Code 63 Ideas
I had the same issue. Turned out that the O2 connector would periodically rest against the header collector, melting the plug to expose enough wire to touch & throw a code. The O2's were ugly when I removed them. Even with only 12k miles at that time.
