WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

My 1990 took a tire tread to the windshield on the freeway at 70+mph.:thumbsdo: I am looking for a replacement - anyone have a nice one in the garage? Also, my glass guy said to get the OEM install kit with all the moldings and weatherstripping. My insurance will cover costs within reason but I need both fairly fast. Anyone want to make a deal?

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

I have never seen a kit to do this but good luck finding the parts.

if you need the part numbers pm me and I can hook you up

But really you only need the glass and the weatherstripping.

The weatherstripping retainers for the front glass are still available and the windshield molding sides are available I think the top windshield molding is No longer available.

also the moldings left and right are around $200 a piece so if your going to replace yours with new have them take care of the olds ones you can resell them.

the parts that are still available you can go to your local dealer have them look them up and get the part numbers

oh wait I think the weatherstrip reatainers for the front are now discontinued I just checked on this the other day can't rememeber if it was the frot or back ones.

anyway getting hard to come by.

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

Email zrwonder@comcast.net (Gibby)

he has an early one for $1k (he can ship asap)

There will be some windshields (they just shipped from Finland) in under 1 month.

Near perfect with the logo on the wrong side ($1300 crated), plus shipping. If you can wait, this is an option too. Both early and later windshields are available.

cheers

David

Thanks for all the replies. This forum is a life saver!

I saw Gibby's post, but I was a little shy of the delam and a few small chips since my window was almost flawless. I was hoping to shake the trees and see what else was out there. I got a PM from another member who is in my area and has one of the older reproductions in a crate and is willing to sell, and it may be just what I am looking for.

How did people feel about the reproductions? Any problems? Advice? Would there be any difference between this and a new reproduction? Thanks in advance.

Quality is decent but a repro is a repro. Are you showing your car ? If not, most have gone with new C-4 glass at a fraction of the price for a delam used original or a reproduction.

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

Sgreg - I am not showing the car, but I am the second owner and it has been very well kept. It has 39,000 miles, has always been garaged and hand washed, never seen even a door ding or rock chip and has near flawless factory paint. I'd like to keep it as original as possible. I don't think I'd shell out for a repro if it were my money, and I don't want a used one with delam but since the insurance will cover it - why not protect the value of the ZR and take the $1300 one?

When you say a repro is a repro, can you be more specific? What kinds of defects does it have? If it's as good as C4 glass, but helps my car look a little more OEM I'm gonna go with it. Thanks for the input.

Did you understand that the $1300 windshield is not the real thing ?? It is a reproduction. Therefore, it is not original equipment and in reality not any better than a C-4 window if you are looking to keep the car original.

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

The repro has the Windshield information on the wrong side of the window and no LOF logo. iF your not showing it consider just getting a plain C4 windshield. If you want to keep the car all original buy Gibbys

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

Yes, I am clear on the logo differences and it not being OEM. But thanks for checking, cause you never know ;)

I did some digging and a search here lead me to that "other" forum and I found some older info there. I guess the ones that were not broken were of good quality and with the understanding that they don't have the correct logo they were otherwise nice. There were a few guys who posted that they were happy with them.

So since the insurance will cover it is there a reason why I wouldn't want the repro vs. a C4 windshield?

No

If it were my car I would go for the reproduction and explain to the insurance company the differences between OEM and the reproduction. If you are in a diminished value state they may offer up additional $$$

A thought anyway!

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

Thanks phrogs for the part numbers. GM parts direct shows all of them except the 14049033 are in stock, and it says that isn't available because of size or fragility? I guess I'll call a local dealer (the one I always used just closed up after decades - what's this world coming to?), but it looks like all the parts are around.

I have a deal pending with a local member for his crated repro. Hopefully it'll all be back in and settled by the end of next week so I can get back on the road.:iroc:

P.S. jrd1990zr1 thanks for the suggestion, not a bad idea. I'll push a little and see what I can get!

Some of them show up but I did call my local dealer on a few of them as well as partszone online and was told that some are now discontinued so it might be time to remove carefully bead blast and repaint-recoat these parts.

They come off pretty easy but most of them the sun has beat them up and as for the retainers you need to remove all the old weatherstriping sealant so a quick blasting would take care of that better than scraping it out.

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

My body shop was able to get all the moldings and weatherstripping with the exception of the upper molding, which is out of production. That is the piece that was damaged and that I needed the most. By some miracle my glass guy was able to find one hiding in a parts house that didn't even show on their computers. They made him pay $550 for it, but since it's the insurance's dime I'm just glad he found OEM.

Also, I did make a deal with a member here for his repro that he had purchased through Kurt a year or so ago that was still sitting in the crate. He let me have it for the $1300 + $200 for shipping that he paid for it. That is what I would have paid if I got one in the next batch that is coming, but he had it today, not 6+ weeks from now so I am happy. The glass looks good with the few minor differences from the LOF that have been mentioned before. My glass guy says it is good quality, and worth the money for such a rare design. He's going to install it in the next few days, so maybe I'll post some pictures when it's in.

Thanks to all who replied and offered help and advice.

Now that is a beautiful ending to a long saga.

It is what the brotherhood and the ZOO (our forum) is all about.

Turns out that the moldings and retainers that the dealer sent didn't quite fit despite being OEM? There were very slight differences and mine were still cherry so I returned them for new weatherstripping.

All I have is the top molding (which was the hardest to find), and it has a small scratch from the belting on the tire hitting it and will need to be refinished. I had just planned on holding on to if in case I ever needed it, but that would be like lightening striking twice. If you really wanted it I might let it go.

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

So I thought that I'd post some pictures of the White Racing/Finland reproduction windshield for those who come later and look at this thread looking for help the way I did. Here are pictures showing the reproduction:

http://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.php...&pictureid=501

http://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.php...&pictureid=502

The exact details of the glass differ from OEM.

Here are the "cons" -
These do not have the LOF or Kool-off logos.
The logo they have is in the wrong corner.
The blackout along the bottom is cut at a sharp angle, not on a radius like stock.
Some say that the purple-ish tint is not as pronounced as stock.
They run around $1500 to your door (vs $350 for standard C4.)

Here are the "pros"
They are made by a high quality glass manufacturer. (As per my glass guy)
They have the correct factory laminate.
They have the correct radar cut-outs for both early and late models.
They do not delaminate.
They are available(White Racing sells a NOS late model glass for $4000, other than that good luck finding one at all.)
They are brand new.

I am very happy with my windshield since my insurance company paid for it. Had it been money out of my pocket it would have been a very hard decision. Good luck to anyone else having the same adventure!

Looks great --nice end result --- as close to NOS as you are going to get at appx.1/3 the price.

Re: WTB: Windshield and/or install kit

Whenever a windshield replacement is quoted on these cars the trim is always included because most of the time its destroyed getting it off.The trim has double sided tape that helps seal it against water.Lacquer thinner and some patients works in removing the trim. One positive note on using the original trim, the holes for the trim were drilled as the trim went on the car,new trim and your drilling more holes,at least it was like this when I replaced the windshield in an 84 I had years ago, that was a total pain in the a$$ job. When I did this I bought all 3 pieces of the trim new, couldnt see paying that much for the trim that looked like crap so I didnt take one side and the top piece but kept one side for paint reference. When I was desperate for cash months ago I couldn't give this piece of trim away, glad I kept it.
