Buy American
 

I prefer to buy American cars. However, the traditional makes like Ford or Chevy are build in Mexico or Canada now. And Toyota and others make cars in the US.

I have never owned a foreign label car but now what?
If my Ford is built in Mexico is it better to buy Toyota?
There saying is "moving forward". I believe it.
Even if you don't want to. The Prius has a stopping problem.

I try to buy American cars made in the US. But it is getting harder. Our Regal is from Canada. I won't buy from GM or Chrysler anymore either, after they took billions in tax dollars.

I'm not a big Toyota/Honda fan, but if one of their cars "did it" for me and was made in the US, I dunno, I might pull the trigger... Some Nissans are interesting, but I don't think they make much here.

Boy I hear that. Seems there's not much manufacturing in the US anymore. It would seem that would be (and has been announced) as a strategic direction for the current administration. The problem is it will take at least 5 yrs to pull off.
In the mean time it would help to know what industries the US is after and support them by our purchases. I don't believe in total protectionism but when dumping is detected by one nation or another than strong impediments need to go in.

My personal rule is never to buy foreign made items of greater than $500 unless there is no choice.

Ford & GM still have plants in the US don't they - they haven't all shutdown & moved to Canada or Mexico . You might not be able to buy the particular model you want but you can change models to buy US if that's so important. :confused:

Wow, you are more die-hard than me. If a certain model does what I want, that's what I am likely to buy.

For example, more "US" trucks are being made in Mexico, especially by GM. If, say, you needed a fullsize truck, but they were all made in MX, would you settle for a Colorado or something that doesn't really do what you need?

This is just an example, I'm pretty sure they still have some trucks made here.

I am glad there is still a large selection of used quality GM cars on the market. And Ford is churning out some decent stuff. I won't buy any post-June 1 2009 GM cars. I suspect as time goes on this will get much harder to do though. We need to replace our Regal at some point, it's got 215,000+ miles and it's not gonna keep going forever...

Yah that's it, someone can buy a Cadillac to get the mileage of a Cobalt.
Throwing out the baby with the bath water comes to mind. Might as well buy a Ford :) oh that's right I have one of those too.

I'm not really sure what the solution is. If I needed another car right now I'd buy another vett :)

What I find interesting is hearing someone complain about the balance of trade while sitting in his Toyota. (one not mfg in the US)

Well I'm not buying either American or Jap. But this time I'm buying German.
Actually we are buying this car for my wife that I'm separated from so I may never get to drive it. But I told her that if my money was going to buy her a car that I refused to buy a POS like that Mitsubishi outlander she wanted. After she saw the 530i she fell in love. It was no contest after that.

Anyone who believes foreign cars are the problem is not thinking correctly. A capitalist, read healthy (not what they refer to as capitalist now), economy is neccessary for growth and expansion. Do you honestly think there would have been a zr-1 without it, or a viper, etc?

Corporate greed, unions, government intrusion into the private sector, and dare I say, people turning their back on community and family have resulted in our wonderful service based economy.

When you have almost 50% of a countries working population either working, or pulling a monthly check from the government, you are bound to have inept people making self protection decisions.

Foreign cars, china mart, nor televisions made overseas are the issue, and buying an "american" car wont do a darn thing to stop this spiral.

For my part I just don't know. Seems like starting by not buying a foreign made car seems like a place to start. But what is "foreign"?

I remember when I started my career hearing guys 10yrs younger than me at work commenting on Cadillacs as arrogant statement of greed and godliness. (probably true) Now I see my own son's think the same of BMWs and the like. They like a whole different more functional and practical type of car. Tastes keep changing. Perceptions of what is "cool" to have are molded by adds etc. Personally I would not own a german car. I just think most are ugly. They are reliable enough but I don't like the statement they make if I were seen in one.

The nation is in decline and I for one am pissed. But I'll tell you one thing I won't do and that is blame either Republicans or Democrats. It's all of our faults.

It's easy to point fingers, but nobody wants to look at themselves when they are placing blame. I for one am neither a replican, or democrat, as I cannot stand socialist ideals, and policy contrary to the constitution.

If the government would get out of the way, and make people responsible for their own actions once again, you would see a revival in this country.

Quality will always sell. If you build a better mousetrap, even if you live in the heart of the forest, people will beat a path to your door to buy it. The best car in the world has an English engine, a German gearbox, and some smart ideas, and a transatlantic (for me!) subframe and bodywork. What could be better than that? Who cares where it was built - lets just keep enthusing over these beauties and keep them on the road! Actually in my mind it is becoming more important to reflect on when it was built rather than where! Greetings to all fellow ZR-1 enthusiasts all over the world from Spain!
